MA in Digital Humanities
University of Pisa
Course Overview
Pisa effectively invented this field in Italy — the university has taught Informatica Umanistica since the 1990s and the English-taught Digital Humanities laurea magistrale is its international successor. The two-year degree sits deliberately across two faculties: computational linguistics, text encoding and TEI/XML, natural language processing, digital libraries and metadata standards, digital archaeology and 3D heritage documentation, plus data visualisation and web technologies for cultural collections. Pisa's proximity to the CNR institutes and the Istituto di Linguistica Computazionale gives the programme unusually deep NLP teaching for a humanities degree.
The economics are the other reason to look at it. Italian public universities set fees on an income-assessed scale, and for a Sri Lankan family income declared through the ISEE Parificato the annual contribution typically lands between €0 and €2,400 — an order of magnitude below a UK or Australian equivalent. Regional right-to-study grants (DSU Toscana) add accommodation and meal support on top, and the combination is why Italy is consistently the cheapest credible EU destination for humanities postgraduates.
Entry Requirements
Academic
- check_circle Bachelor's degree (minimum 3 years, 180 ECTS equivalent) in humanities, linguistics, computer science, information studies or a related field.
- check_circle Prior coursework or demonstrated ability in either linguistics/humanities or programming — the programme admits from both sides and expects you to bridge the other.
- check_circle Declaration of Value (DoV) or CIMEA statement of comparability for your Sri Lankan degree, plus legalised transcripts.
- check_circle Pre-enrolment on the Universitaly portal is compulsory for non-EU applicants before the study visa application.
- check_circle Motivation letter and CV; a small portfolio of coding, digital or textual work helps if your background is one-sided.
English Proficiency
- check_circle IELTS Academic: 6.0 Overall.
- check_circle TOEFL iBT: 80 Overall.
- check_circle Waived if your Bachelor's was taught and assessed entirely in English — the standard route for Sri Lankan applicants, evidenced with a Medium of Instruction letter.
- check_circle No Italian required for the degree, though free A1-A2 Italian courses are offered and are genuinely useful for daily life in Pisa.

Career Outcomes & PR
Graduates split between the cultural sector and the language-technology industry: digital archivists and metadata specialists at libraries, museums and national archives; computational linguists and annotation leads at NLP companies; digital publishing and digital-collections roles; and research posts on EU-funded heritage digitisation projects. Italy grants a 12-month post-study job-search permit (permesso per attesa occupazione) after graduation. Sri Lankan graduates come back into a market where digitisation of the National Archives, the Department of National Museums and Sinhala/Tamil language-technology work at LIRNEasia, ICTA and the university sector is chronically short of people who can do both the humanities and the code.
