Course Overview

Ca' Foscari's Environmental Humanities is a two-year, 120-CFU laurea magistrale in class LM-1, taught entirely in English and described by the university as the first of its kind in Italy. The premise is straightforward: the climate and biodiversity crises are not only engineering problems, and the people who will communicate, govern and litigate them need training in history, philosophy, anthropology, literature and law as well as in environmental science.

The curriculum crosses disciplines deliberately — environmental history and historical ecology, environmental ethics and philosophy, ecocriticism and environmental literature, political ecology and environmental anthropology, environmental law and governance, and science communication, alongside foundational ecology and climate science so the humanities work rests on real physical understanding. A final internship is compulsory, and the thesis is written in English and is normally linked to it. Fieldwork in the Venetian lagoon — one of the most closely studied and most visibly threatened environments in Europe — is a recurring feature.

This is a capped programme, and the numbers matter. For 2026/27 Ca' Foscari set 55 places in total, of which 15 are reserved for non-EU applicants who require a visa, and three of those 15 are earmarked under the Marco Polo scheme — so realistically around a dozen places are open to an applicant from Sri Lanka. Selection is not by examination: it is scored on the CV, worth 60 points, and a 500-word presentation letter in English, worth 40. That letter is the single most important document in the file.

On cost, non-EU students who do not file Italian ISEE income documentation pay a flat annual fee set by country group — €1,300 a year for a Sri Lankan applicant in 2026/27, inclusive of the regional tax and stamp duty; the ISEE route can reach roughly €2,636. The genuine budget lines are Venice living costs and the roughly €6,900 annual proof of funds the study visa requires, plus a €35 application fee and a €200 acceptance fee at enrolment. Venice itself is the argument for studying the subject here: sea-level rise, over-tourism, subsidence and heritage under environmental pressure are all live, and the parallels with coastal erosion in southern and eastern Sri Lanka, the Negombo and Muthurajawela lagoon systems, and post-flood heritage questions are close enough to be directly transferable.

Entry Requirements

description

Academic

  • check_circle A Bachelor's degree of at least three years (SLQF Level 6, UGC-recognised or equivalent). Graduates of specified Italian degree classes are automatically eligible; everyone else is assessed on credits.
  • check_circle For applicants outside those classes, at least 42 CFU are required across botany, zoology and ecology, geography, art history, English linguistics, anthropology, philosophy, pedagogy, psychology, economics, statistics, and sociology or political science. Submit full module descriptions with the transcript.
  • check_circle Selection is scored rather than examined: the CV carries 60 points and a 500-word presentation letter in English carries 40. Treat the letter as the decisive document — it should name a specific environmental question you intend to work on.
  • check_circle Places are capped. For 2026/27 the programme admitted 55 students in total with 15 places reserved for non-EU applicants requiring a visa, so apply in the first window rather than the repechage round.
  • check_circle Non-EU applicants resident abroad must complete Universitaly pre-enrolment by the September deadline and hold a Declaration of Value (DoV) or CIMEA statement of comparability. A €35 application fee applies, and a €200 acceptance fee is due on enrolment.

English Proficiency

  • check_circle English at CEFR B2 is mandatory and must be certified at enrolment — without it, enrolment cannot be completed.
  • check_circle Ca' Foscari's B2 equivalence table accepts IELTS Academic in the 5.5-6.5 range and TOEFL iBT in the 72-94 range. It publishes a range rather than a single cut score and does not specify sub-scores.
  • check_circle Cambridge English B2 First, PTE Academic 59-75 and Trinity ISE II are also accepted.
  • check_circle A self-certification exemption form exists for applicants with prior English-medium education, but its exact criteria are not clearly published — Sri Lankan applicants should hold a certificate unless the exemption is confirmed in writing.
  • check_circle No Italian is required to study; free Italian courses are offered to international students and make fieldwork and daily life considerably easier.

Career Outcomes & PR

Italy issues a 12-month post-study job-seeker residence permit (permesso per attesa occupazione) that converts to a work permit once you are employed. Ca' Foscari does not publish a named destinations list for this programme, so treat the following as the realistic market rather than a school claim: environmental communication and journalism, museum and heritage interpretation, sustainability and ESG reporting teams, environmental NGOs and foundations, cultural institutions, environmental education, and policy research at EU and UN bodies — FAO and IFAD are headquartered in Rome and UNESCO's World Heritage work on Venice runs through the city. The compulsory final internship is the practical bridge into a first role, and the degree also feeds PhD programmes in environmental history and political ecology. Sri Lankan returnees route into the Ministry of Environment and the Central Environmental Authority, IUCN Sri Lanka, UNDP and UNEP country programmes, the Environmental Foundation Limited, environmental journalism, coastal-zone and heritage management under the Coast Conservation Department and the Department of Archaeology, and ESG and sustainability-reporting roles at John Keells Holdings, Hayleys, MAS Holdings and Dilmah's conservation arm.
