Bachelor of Philosophy (Honours) — Physics
Australian National University
Course Overview
ANU is ranked #30 globally in QS World Rankings and #1 in Australia for Physics & Astronomy. The Bachelor of Philosophy (BPhil) Honours is ANU's flagship 4-year research-intensive undergraduate degree, modelled on the elite UK / US BSc Hons + Masters style. Students start original research from year 1 in the Research School of Physics — home to the gravitational-wave detection collaboration (LIGO/Virgo Sri Lankan-relevant: ANU was first to confirm GW170817), the Mount Stromlo Observatory, and the Plasma Research Laboratory. Each year includes a dedicated research project supervised by leading faculty.
Sri Lankan applicants — particularly Mathematics / Physics Olympiad medalists, NIE Physics graduates considering academic careers, and Royal College / Visakha / Trinity / Methodist senior-school physics scholars — choose ANU BPhil for the unparalleled research immersion and the direct PhD pipeline to Cambridge DAMTP, MIT, Princeton, Caltech and the Max Planck Institutes. The BPhil is selective: typically 15-20 international entrants per year across all sciences.
