Bachelor of Marine Science
James Cook University (JCU)
Course Overview
James Cook University's Bachelor of Marine Science is ranked #2 in the world for Marine and Freshwater Biology (CWUR by Subject) — JCU sits on the doorstep of the Great Barrier Reef and runs the Orpheus Island Research Station as a working teaching facility. The 3-year degree spans coral reef ecology, fisheries science, marine biology, oceanography, aquaculture and tropical marine conservation. Students complete a minimum of 18 days of structured field work — much of it on the reef itself — and can specialise via majors in Marine Biology, Aquaculture Science and Technology, or Oceanography.
Sri Lankan applicants choose JCU because of the unparalleled tropical-marine access (Sri Lanka shares similar coral reef ecosystems with Queensland), the 4-year 485 Temporary Graduate Visa pathway open to JCU's Townsville and Cairns campuses (designated regional locations earn an extra year on the post-study work visa), and the direct pipeline into NARA, the Department of Wildlife Conservation, and Maldives / Indian Ocean marine consultancies.
