BEng (Hons) Mechanical Engineering
University of Malta
Course Overview
University of Malta's BEng (Hons) Mechanical Engineering is delivered through the Faculty of Engineering at Malta's only public university (founded 1592). The 4-year accredited programme covers thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, solid mechanics, materials science, manufacturing systems, control engineering, CAD/CAE, energy systems, and a final-year design project. Malta's Mediterranean climate hosts a renewable-energy R&D push (offshore wind feasibility, solar PV deployment) and the country's flagship MRO employer Lufthansa Technik Malta runs aircraft heavy maintenance at Luqa.
Sri Lankan A-Level applicants from Physical Science (Combined Maths / Physics / Chemistry) treat this as a route into EU-level mechanical engineering at the lowest tuition tier (€10,000-€11,000/yr Bachelor's). All teaching is in English. Internships at Lufthansa Technik Malta and the small but active Maltese precision-manufacturing sector are accessible. Graduates qualify for Chartered Engineer registration pathways and return into mechanical / production / energy roles at MAS Holdings, Brandix, John Keells Engineering, CEB, Holcim Lanka, and the manufacturing arms of Hayleys and Aitken Spence.

Career Outcomes & PR
Mechanical engineering graduates qualify for Malta's 6-month post-study job-search residence permit, with conversion to a Single Permit (work + residence) at a qualifying offer. The EU Blue Card threshold (~€26,000/yr in 2025) is among the lowest in the EU. Major Malta employers: Lufthansa Technik Malta (aircraft MRO), Methode Electronics Malta, Trelleborg Sealing Solutions Malta, ST Microelectronics Malta, plus Malta's growing renewable energy sector. Median starting graduate salary €22,000-€28,000. Sri Lankan returnees route into mechanical, production, and energy roles at MAS Holdings, Brandix, John Keells Engineering, Hayleys, Aitken Spence, CEB, and Holcim Lanka — Chartered Engineer (Sri Lanka) registration via IESL is the standard pathway.
