Bachelor of Engineering (Hons) in Mechanical Engineering (Manufacturing)
MCAST
Course Overview
MCAST's Institute of Engineering and Transport delivers the Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) in Mechanical Engineering (Manufacturing) at MQF Level 6 — an EU-accredited honours degree, taught in English, over four full-time years and 240 ECTS at the Paola main campus. MCAST runs mechanical engineering in two named variants, Manufacturing and Plant; this is the manufacturing-facing one, oriented toward production processes, product realisation and quality. As MCAST is a vocational institution, the degree is deliberately applied: workshop and laboratory hours sit alongside the theory rather than after it.
The curriculum runs through engineering mathematics, statics and dynamics, thermodynamics and fluid mechanics, materials science, manufacturing and production processes, mechanical design with CAD/CAM, control and automation, quality engineering, maintenance and engineering management, closing with a supervised final-year engineering project. Industrial placement is embedded, and MCAST's engineering institute has long-standing links with Malta's aviation-maintenance cluster, its shipyards and its manufacturing plants.
The single most valuable feature for a Sri Lankan applicant intending to stay in Europe is the professional recognition: MCAST states that both mechanical engineering variants are recognised by Malta's Bord tal-Inġiniera as a prerequisite for the Engineering Warrant (Ing.) under Act No. XLVIII of 2021. That is a route to a licensed engineering title in an EU member state, which a generic overseas engineering degree does not by itself provide.
On cost, MCAST's most recently published fixed figure for a four-year Level 6 degree is a total of €26,000 for non-EU students — roughly €6,500 a year — and the college's current programme documentation now directs international applicants to its MG2i office for a quotation rather than publishing a number. Treat €6,500 a year as indicative and confirm it in writing before budgeting. MCAST also operates a standing scholarship that exempts the final year's fees on three- and four-year bachelor's degrees, which would materially reduce the total. This route suits students from the Sri Lankan Physical Science or Engineering Technology A/L streams and holders of NDT or NDES diplomas who want a full honours degree abroad without a UK-scale fee bill.
Entry Requirements
Academic
- check_circle MCAST's stated route is two A-Level passes plus two Intermediate-level passes, with compulsory A-Levels in Physics and Mathematics (Pure or Applied) averaging Grade C across the two — combinations such as C,C / B,D / A,E satisfy it. Sri Lankan Cambridge, Edexcel and GCE A/L Physical Science profiles are mapped against that by MCAST's international office.
- check_circle Alternatively, an MCAST Advanced Diploma in Manufacturing or in Polymer Process Technicians at 60% or above, or an MCAST Undergraduate Diploma in Foundations of Engineering, gives direct entry.
- check_circle MCAST also runs a parallel Mechanical Engineering (Plant) variant oriented toward operations, maintenance and plant systems — worth comparing before you choose, because the entry diplomas differ.
- check_circle International applications close on 30 June for the October intake; the visa timeline after that date is tight, so file early.
- check_circle Online application with certified, translated transcripts, passport copy and CV.
English Proficiency
- check_circle IELTS Academic: 5.5 Overall (CEFR B2 is the stated standard). MCAST publishes no sub-score requirement at this level.
- check_circle TOEFL iBT: 87-109.
- check_circle Cambridge English B2 First, or PTE Academic General Level 3 (59-75).
- check_circle MCAST's own Award in Preparation for English Language Skills (Advanced) at MQF Level 5 also satisfies the requirement, and is the route for applicants who fall short.
- check_circle MCAST's English policy lists a medium-of-instruction exemption only for applicants from India — Sri Lanka is not on that list, so plan to sit IELTS rather than rely on an English-medium schooling letter.

Career Outcomes & PR
MCAST names Manufacturing Process Engineer, Engineering Designer, Quality Control Engineer, Production Engineer, Production Manager or Superintendent, Engineering Laboratory Manager, Engineering Manager and Mechanical Engineer among the roles this degree leads to. Malta grants graduates a post-study residence permit to search for work, converting to a Single Permit on a qualifying offer, and the degree is recognised by the Bord tal-Inġiniera as a prerequisite for the Maltese Engineering Warrant. Local employers hiring MCAST engineering graduates include Lufthansa Technik Malta and SR Technics in aircraft maintenance, the Malta Freeport and shipyard operators, Methode Electronics, Playmobil Malta, Enemalta and the Water Services Corporation. Graduate engineer salaries in Malta typically start around €22,000-€28,000. Sri Lankan returnees route into production, quality and maintenance engineering at MAS Holdings, Brandix, Hayleys Fabric, CBL, Tokyo Cement and the apparel-sector engineering teams, with Chartered status in Sri Lanka running through IESL's post-graduate training and professional review.
