Course Overview
University of Malta's BEng (Hons) Civil Engineering is delivered through the Faculty of Engineering at Malta's only public university (founded 1592). The 4-year programme is professionally accredited locally and recognised under the Washington Accord lineage, opening routes to Chartered Engineer (CEng) registration in both Malta and Sri Lanka via the Institution of Engineers Sri Lanka (IESL). Malta's English-medium delivery and large EU-funded infrastructure programme (Valletta Grand Harbour regeneration, Gozo tunnel feasibility studies, road and water projects) give students live site exposure.
Sri Lankan A-Level applicants from the Physical Science stream choose Malta for the combination of EU-level engineering accreditation, English-medium teaching, and the lowest tuition fees among accredited EU civil engineering programmes (€10,000-€11,000/yr). The curriculum covers structural mechanics, geotechnics, fluid mechanics, hydrology, transportation engineering, construction materials, environmental engineering, surveying, and a final-year design project. Graduates route into Maltese consultancies and into Sri Lankan firms (CECB, Maga Engineering, Sanken, Access Engineering, ICC) where EU-trained civil engineers are valued for international projects.

Civil engineering graduates qualify for Malta's 6-month post-study job-search residence permit, with conversion to a Single Permit (work + residence) at a qualifying offer. Malta's EU Blue Card threshold (~€26,000/yr in 2025) is among the lowest in the EU. Major Malta employers: Infrastructure Malta, Transport Malta, AIS Environmental, MIDI plc, Vassallo Builders, plus EU-funded consultancies on Grand Harbour and Gozo projects. Median starting graduate salary €22,000-€28,000. Sri Lankan returnees route into structural / transport / water engineering at CECB, Maga Engineering, Sanken Construction, Access Engineering, ICC, and the Road Development Authority — Chartered Engineer (Sri Lanka) registration via IESL is the standard pathway.
