USC Marshall Merit Scholarships
USC Marshall is one of the better-known American business schools, and its scholarship mechanism is refreshingly simple: all incoming students are eligible for merit-based scholarships against tuition in the Full-Time MBA, every admitted applicant is considered automatically, there is no separate application form, and the scholarship decision is communicated at the point of admission. The criteria are the same ones used for the admission decision, applied at a more competitive level. That means the work you do on your application — GMAT or GRE, essays, career trajectory, references — is the same work that determines your funding, and there is no second bite. For a Sri Lankan applicant the important part is what is not available. International students are not eligible for US federal financial aid, which rules out Stafford and Perkins loans entirely. Private US loans are theoretically available but generally require a United States co-signer, which most Sri Lankan applicants do not have. The Consortium fellowship route that USC promotes alongside its merit awards is tied to a mission-based membership programme that is not open to international candidates. So in practice a Sri Lankan admitted to Marshall has three sources of money: the Marshall merit award, personal or family funds, and any external scholarship such as Fulbright or an employer sponsorship. Model your budget against that reality rather than against a generic assumption that American universities offer loans. Los Angeles is also an expensive city, and a merit award that covers a portion of tuition leaves accommodation, health insurance and living costs entirely to you.

info How this award actually works
Who awards it
USC Marshall School of Business — not Lanka Scholar. We are not the awarding body and cannot grant, reserve or guarantee this award.
How you are considered
Through your admission application. Awards like this are usually assessed automatically from the application you already submit — there is typically no separate scholarship form to fill in.
What it covers
Merit Awards Against Tuition, Decided at Admission — No Separate Application. This is a reduction in tuition, not a full ride. You still fund the remainder, plus living costs and the balance your visa requires you to show.
Where we come in
We make the admission application strong enough to be competitive — course choice, documents, references and deadlines. The funder makes the decision.
fact_check Eligibility Criteria
Admission Is the Qualification
All incoming Full-Time MBA students are eligible for merit-based scholarships and all admitted applicants are considered. There is no way to strengthen a scholarship case separately from the admission case — they are the same file.
International Students Are Eligible for Marshall Awards
Sri Lankan applicants can receive Marshall merit scholarships on the same basis as domestic candidates. Nationality does not exclude you from the school's own funding.
No US Federal Aid for International Students
International students are not eligible for federal financial aid, including Stafford and Perkins loans. Any funding model that assumes American student loans will not work for a Sri Lankan applicant.
Private Loans Usually Need a US Co-Signer
International students may qualify for private loans if they have a United States co-signer. Without a co-signer resident in the US, this route is generally closed. Do not build a plan around it unless you have that person confirmed.
A Work-Experience Profile Is Expected
The Full-Time MBA is a mid-career degree. Competitive candidates bring several years of progression, quantifiable results and a coherent post-MBA plan. A strong GMAT or GRE score does material work on both admission and scholarship outcomes.
Round Timing Affects the Award
Scholarship funds are committed as rounds proceed. Applying in an early round gives you access to a fuller pool; late-round admits frequently receive little or nothing even with strong profiles.

Prepare the test and the story together
Because one file decides both admission and funding, invest in the GMAT or GRE and in essays that connect your Sri Lankan work history to a specific post-MBA role. Vague career pivots read poorly at this level.
Apply in round one or two
Submit early. The difference between a round-one and a round-four admit at most US business schools is measured in tens of thousands of dollars of scholarship, not in admission probability alone.
Read the admission letter for the award
The scholarship decision arrives with the admission decision. Check the amount, whether it applies to both years, and any conditions on academic standing.
Build the funding stack without US loans
Combine the Marshall award with family funds, any external scholarship such as Fulbright, and employer support. If a Sri Lankan bank loan is part of the plan, check the interest rate and the collateral requirement carefully against a two-year period with no income.
Budget Los Angeles honestly
Housing, a car or transport, health insurance and food in Los Angeles are substantial. Ask the school for its official cost-of-attendance figure and convert the whole two-year number at 320 rupees to the dollar.
Apply for the F-1 visa
USC issues an I-20 once you accept and demonstrate funding for the first year. Sri Lankan applicants pay the SEVIS fee and interview at the US Embassy in Colombo. Be prepared to evidence the funding source clearly — a scholarship letter plus documented family funds is the standard combination.
Why USC Marshall?
Marshall sits inside the University of Southern California in Los Angeles, with strengths in entertainment and media business, entrepreneurship, technology management and international business, and it benefits from one of the largest and most actively used alumni networks in American higher education — the Trojan Family is a genuine recruiting asset rather than a marketing line. Los Angeles gives access to entertainment, aerospace, logistics through the port complex, and a substantial startup scene. For a Sri Lankan candidate the trade-off is cost and post-study uncertainty: US work authorisation after an MBA depends on OPT and then the H-1B lottery, which is not guaranteed. Factor that into whether the total investment makes sense against a European or Australian alternative.

Where the scholarship money actually is
Looking for a scholarship because of the cost?
Then start here instead. Scholarships are competitive, usually partial, and decided by someone else — they are the least reliable way to make studying abroad affordable. Your destination and course choice move the number far more, and both are entirely within your control.
