Trinity Research Doctorate Awards (TRDA)
The Trinity Research Doctorate Awards are Trinity College Dublin's own fully funded PhD scheme, funded from alumni donations and the university's commercial revenue rather than from a national research council. That matters, because unlike most Irish state funding the TRDA explicitly pays tuition at either the EU or the non-EU rate — so a Sri Lankan awardee is not left covering a fee gap. Each award provides EUR 25,000 a year plus fees for four years of full-time study, which is around LKR 8.6 million a year in stipend at current rates. For the 2026-27 round Trinity advertised 12 PI-based awards, split across two categories: one reserved for early career researchers appointed from 2020/21 onwards, and one open to academic staff at all grades as a joint student-and-PI application. There is an important structural point Sri Lankan applicants need to understand. These awards are applied for by the Trinity academic, not by you directly. The application is submitted by a principal investigator entitled to act as principal supervisor, and in the joint category you are named alongside them. Your route in is therefore to find and convince a Trinity supervisor first, ideally months ahead, and then to be nominated. Awardees must be new entrants registering in September or March of the relevant cycle. Two limitations worth stating plainly: if you hold other funding, your total stipend cannot exceed EUR 25,000 a year, so this does not stack; and research costs beyond tuition and stipend — consumables, fieldwork, conference travel — are the student's responsibility unless the supervisor covers them from a separate grant. The 2026-27 call closed at noon on 26 January 2026, with results announced by end April, and the scheme runs annually on that rhythm.
2027/28 round expected to open in late 2026 with a late-January 2027 deadline, mirroring the 2026-27 cycle (closed 26 January 2026, results by end April) — confirm on tcd.ie/graduatestudies/awards

info How this award actually works
Who awards it
Trinity College Dublin — not Lanka Scholar. We are not the awarding body and cannot grant, reserve or guarantee this award.
How you are considered
Through your admission application. Awards like this are usually assessed automatically from the application you already submit — there is typically no separate scholarship form to fill in.
What it covers
EUR 25,000 Stipend + Full Non-EU Tuition Fees for 4 Years. This is a reduction in tuition, not a full ride. You still fund the remainder, plus living costs and the balance your visa requires you to show.
Where we come in
We make the admission application strong enough to be competitive — course choice, documents, references and deadlines. The funder makes the decision.
fact_check Eligibility Criteria
Open to Non-EU Candidates
Trinity states the awards are open to EU and non-EU candidates, and the award pays tuition at whichever rate applies. Sri Lankan applicants are therefore fully covered on fees, which is rare among Irish doctoral schemes.
Applied For by a Trinity Supervisor
Applications are submitted by a Trinity principal investigator entitled to serve as principal supervisor. Category 1 is restricted to early career researchers appointed during or after 2020/21; Category 2 is a joint student-and-PI application open to all academic staff grades.
New Entrant Only
Students must be new entrants registering in the September or March intake of the relevant cycle. Existing Trinity PhD students cannot be moved onto the award.
Does Not Stack With Other Funding
If you receive other funding, your total stipend cannot exceed EUR 25,000 a year. Research costs beyond tuition and stipend are the student's responsibility unless separately funded.
account_tree Application Process
Find a Trinity principal investigator
Identify academics in your discipline whose work matches your interests. Email a concise proposal, CV and transcripts in the autumn — well before the January deadline — and ask directly whether they intend to apply for a TRDA.
Work with your PI on the application
In the joint Student+PI category you are named in the application, so you will contribute the research plan and supporting documents. Your PI submits through Trinity's online form.
Await the outcome
Applications close at noon in late January and results are announced by the end of April. A PI may submit to both categories but only one award will be made if successful.
Register and apply for your visa
Awardees register in September or the following March. Apply for the Irish long-stay (D) study visa as soon as your offer and funding letter are in hand — Dublin accommodation should be arranged in parallel and early.

Looking for a scholarship because of the cost?
Then start here instead. Scholarships are competitive, usually partial, and decided by someone else — they are the least reliable way to make studying abroad affordable. Your destination and course choice move the number far more, and both are entirely within your control.
