Life Science Zurich Graduate School PhD Positions

The Life Science Zurich Graduate School is run jointly by the University of Zurich and ETH Zurich and covers 17 separate PhD programmes across the life sciences, from molecular biology and neuroscience to biomedical engineering and systems biology. It offers over 80 fully funded PhD positions on a regular basis. The funding matters enormously for a Sri Lankan applicant: every research group provides financial support in line with the Swiss National Science Foundation's PhD salary scale, currently between CHF 48,216 and CHF 55,000 a year — roughly LKR 17.8 to 20.4 million — paid as an employment contract with accident and unemployment insurance. This is a salaried job, not a stipend you must stretch, and Swiss PhD pay is generous even measured against Zurich's high cost of living. The programme states it aims to attract the most promising young scientists from across the world, and applications are entirely in English. There are two application rounds a year, closing 1 May and 1 November. To be eligible you must hold, or expect soon to obtain, a Master's degree or equivalent in a relevant field from a recognised university. The doctorate typically runs four years, and on arrival you register with either UZH or ETH Zurich depending on which institution your research group belongs to. Be realistic: these are among the most sought-after PhD positions in Europe and the applicant pool is global. A research-based Master's thesis, demonstrable laboratory or computational skill, and ideally a publication or preprint are what get an application shortlisted. Zurich is also one of the world's most expensive cities — the salary covers it comfortably for one person, but not for supporting a family back home at the same time.

Two calls a year with application deadlines of 1 May and 1 November. Over 80 fully funded positions across 17 PhD programmes — confirm current call details on lifescience-graduateschool.uzh.ch

how_to_reg

How you are considered

Through your admission application. Awards like this are usually assessed automatically from the application you already submit — there is typically no separate scholarship form to fill in.

payments

What it covers

Fully Funded PhD with CHF 48,216-55,000 Annual Salary. This is a reduction in tuition, not a full ride. You still fund the remainder, plus living costs and the balance your visa requires you to show.

handshake

Where we come in

We make the admission application strong enough to be competitive — course choice, documents, references and deadlines. The funder makes the decision.

fact_check Eligibility Criteria

public

Open Worldwide

The graduate school explicitly recruits from across the world and there is no nationality restriction. Sri Lankan applicants apply through the same portal, in English, on the same terms.

school

Master's Degree or Equivalent

You must hold, or expect soon to obtain, a Master's degree or equivalent in a relevant field from a recognised university. Life sciences, biomedicine, chemistry, bioinformatics and biomedical engineering backgrounds all apply.

science

Demonstrated Research Capability

Competitive applications show substantial hands-on research beyond coursework — a research thesis, specific techniques mastered, and often a publication, preprint or conference contribution.

warning

Highly Competitive, Globally

Fully salaried Swiss PhD positions attract applications worldwide. Apply to several groups and programmes, and pair this with other applications rather than treating it as your only route.

account_tree Application Process

1

Identify programmes and research groups

Browse the 17 PhD programmes and shortlist research groups whose work matches your Master's training. Naming specific groups and explaining the fit is what separates a strong motivation letter from a generic one.

2

Apply by 1 May or 1 November

  • CV detailing research experience and techniques
  • Motivation letter naming target groups
  • Master's transcripts and degree certificate or expected completion date
  • Referees who can speak to your research work
3

Selection and interviews

Shortlisted candidates are invited to interview. A match with a specific supervisor and group is ultimately what converts an interview into a position.

4

Register with UZH or ETH Zurich

On arrival you register with the University of Zurich or ETH Zurich depending on your research group's affiliation. Your contract is with the employing institution.

5

Apply for the Swiss residence permit

With your employment contract and admission, apply for the Swiss residence permit for employed doctoral researchers. Zurich housing is scarce and expensive — start searching as soon as your offer is confirmed.

Why Life Science Zurich?

Zurich holds two of Europe's strongest research universities on one urban life sciences cluster, with ETH Zurich and UZH sharing infrastructure, core facilities and a joint graduate school. For a Sri Lankan life sciences graduate it is a fully salaried, English-language route into a top-tier European research career.
