Jamk Tuition Fee Scholarships

Jamk University of Applied Sciences in Jyväskylä runs one of the more unusual scholarship models in Finland, and a Sri Lankan applicant needs to understand it before assuming it will soften the first-year bill — because it will not. Non-EU and non-EEA students starting after 1 August 2025 pay EUR 10,000 a year for an English-taught bachelor's degree and EUR 12,000 a year for an English-taught master's, roughly LKR 3.45 million and LKR 4.14 million respectively. Jamk offers no scholarship at all in the first year, and no early-bird discount. What it offers instead is a reward for effort you put in once you are there. On bachelor's programmes, from year two onwards you can claim EUR 4,000 off your fees by passing the Finnish National Certificate of Language Proficiency (YKI) at A2 level, and a further EUR 6,000 by reaching B1 — up to EUR 10,000 in total, or about LKR 3.45 million, entirely tied to learning Finnish. Only YKI certificates are accepted, and you must complete two of the specified skill combinations (speaking and writing, listening and writing, or reading and speaking). On master's programmes the logic is different: a single EUR 4,000 award granted only if you graduate within the programme's recommended period, two years for a 60-credit degree or three for a 90-credit one, and only if you apply before you graduate — Jamk will not backdate it. Neither award is automatic. Bachelor's applications for the current round open in August 2026, with decisions issued quarterly.

Nothing in Year One

Jamk does not award any scholarship against the first year's tuition, and it runs no early-bird discount. A Sri Lankan family must be able to fund the full EUR 10,000 or EUR 12,000 first-year fee outright before this scholarship becomes relevant at all.

Bachelor's Awards Are Finnish Language Awards

From year two you can claim EUR 4,000 by certifying Finnish at A2 level and a further EUR 6,000 at B1. This is not a merit prize for good grades — it is payment for learning the national language, which is a real and demanding commitment on top of an English-taught degree.

Only YKI Certificates Count

Jamk accepts only the Finnish National Certificates of Language Proficiency (YKI), and you must complete two of the accepted skill combinations: speaking and writing, listening and writing, or reading and speaking. Language courses or in-house tests do not substitute.

schedule

Master's Award Depends on Finishing On Time

The EUR 4,000 master's scholarship is granted only where you graduate within the recommended period of study — two years for a 60-credit programme, three for a 90-credit one. Extend beyond that and you lose it.

Apply Before You Graduate, Not After

Jamk states plainly that the master's scholarship cannot be awarded once you have graduated. Submit the application while you are still a registered student in your final term.

public

Only Fee-Paying Non-EU/EEA Students

The whole scheme exists to offset tuition, which EU and EEA citizens do not pay in Finland. Sri Lankan citizens are fee-paying and therefore eligible.

account_tree Application Process

1

Apply through Studyinfo for an English-taught Jamk degree

Finnish applications run through the national Studyinfo portal in fixed joint-application rounds. Jamk's English-taught programmes usually require an entrance exam or a certificate-based selection alongside your Sri Lankan transcripts and English evidence.

2

Fund and pay the first-year tuition

Plan for the full EUR 10,000 or EUR 12,000 with no discount. Finland also requires proof of sufficient funds for your residence permit — currently in the region of EUR 800 a month for living costs, on top of tuition. Confirm the exact figure with Migri before applying.

3

Bachelor's: sit the YKI test and claim from year two

Register for the YKI examination in the Finnish language and pass the required skill combinations at A2, then later at B1. Submit the certificate to Jamk in the application round that opens in August. Decisions are issued quarterly.

4

Master's: apply as you approach graduation

Track your credits against the recommended study period from day one. Submit the scholarship application in your final term, before your graduation is registered.

5

Finnish residence permit from Sri Lanka

Sri Lankan students apply for a Finnish residence permit through Enter Finland and then attend a visit to prove identity at a Finnish mission or VFS centre serving Sri Lanka — Finland's representation for Sri Lanka is handled from New Delhi, so build travel or courier time into your plan. Finland grants a residence permit for job-seeking after graduation.

Why Jamk?

Jamk is one of Finland's larger universities of applied sciences, based in Jyväskylä in the central lake district, with English-taught degrees in business, ICT, engineering, health care and tourism. Finnish applied-sciences degrees are practice-oriented with compulsory work placements, and Jyväskylä is a genuine student city where living costs sit below Helsinki's. The language-linked scholarship model is an honest signal of Jamk's intent: it rewards students who plan to integrate and stay in Finland rather than treating the degree purely as an exit route. If you want to work in Finland afterwards, functional Finnish is in practice necessary outside a handful of ICT roles, so the scholarship and the career path point in the same direction.
