Admission to a Helsinki English Master's
You must apply for and be admitted to one of the University of Helsinki's English-taught Master's programmes. Around 35 international Master's programmes participate — full list on helsinki.fi/admissions.
Strong Academic Profile
Selection ranks admitted applicants on academic merit — undergraduate GPA, programme fit, and (for some programmes) supplementary essays or interviews. Sri Lankan first-class Bachelor's holders from Moratuwa, Colombo, Peradeniya, Kelaniya, or international Bachelor's degrees present strongly.
English Proficiency
IELTS 6.5 (no band below 5.5) or TOEFL iBT 92+ is the standard requirement. The University of Helsinki may waive the English test for applicants whose Bachelor's was taught entirely in English at a recognised university — Sri Lankan English-medium degrees often qualify.

Apply via Studyinfo.fi
Submit your Master's application via Finland's central admissions portal (Studyinfo.fi) by 8 January 2026. Choose up to 6 Finnish programmes; rank University of Helsinki programmes as your top choice if Helsinki is your priority. Pay the €100 non-EU application fee.
Submit supporting documents
Upload to Studyinfo.fi: official transcripts (with Sinhala/Tamil-language documents translated to English by accredited translator), degree certificate, English language certificate, CV, and motivation letter.
Automatic scholarship consideration
Every admitted non-EU/EEA student is automatically considered. No separate application form is required. The University of Helsinki ranks admitted students based on academic merit and assigns scholarship tiers.
Award with admission letter
Scholarship outcomes are issued together with the admission offer — typically March-April 2026. Awards are automatically applied to your tuition invoice. Renewal in year 2 requires earning at least 55 ECTS in year 1 with sufficient grades.
