FH Upper Austria Merit Scholarship

FH Upper Austria is one of Austria's largest universities of applied sciences, spread across four campuses at Hagenberg (informatics and media), Linz (health and social sciences), Steyr (business and management) and Wels (engineering and environmental sciences). Its merit scholarship is modest in absolute terms but sits on top of an already very affordable fee structure, and that combination is what makes it worth a Sri Lankan applicant's attention. Third-country nationals pay EUR 726.72 per semester plus an ÖH fee of EUR 26.20 — around LKR 260,000 a semester in total, which is a fraction of what the same qualification costs in the UK or Australia. From the second semester onwards, students with a grade average below 2.0 on the Austrian scale who have also completed a German language course can apply for a merit scholarship covering 50% of the semester tuition fee, cutting it to roughly EUR 363. Applications go through your study programme assistant rather than a central office, and there is no published fixed deadline, so ask your programme coordinator early in the semester. Two things to weigh honestly. The German course requirement means this is not a pure grades award — you have to invest in language study alongside your degree, which is useful in Austria anyway but is real extra work. And the sum saved, about LKR 135,000 a semester, will not move the needle on your overall budget; living costs in Upper Austria of roughly EUR 900-1,000 a month remain the dominant expense. FH Upper Austria also notes that third-country students can request a further reduction to EUR 363.36 per semester if they can prove a close relationship to Austria, though the qualifying categories are narrow and most Sri Lankan applicants will not meet them.

Available from the second semester onwards; applications are made through your study programme assistant with no fixed published deadline — ask your programme coordinator at the start of each semester

Who awards it

FH Oberösterreich (University of Applied Sciences Upper Austria) — not Lanka Scholar. We are not the awarding body and cannot grant, reserve or guarantee this award.

how_to_reg

How you are considered

Through your admission application. Awards like this are usually assessed automatically from the application you already submit — there is typically no separate scholarship form to fill in.

payments

What it covers

50% of the Semester Tuition Fee for High Achievers. This is a reduction in tuition, not a full ride. You still fund the remainder, plus living costs and the balance your visa requires you to show.

Where we come in

We make the admission application strong enough to be competitive — course choice, documents, references and deadlines. The funder makes the decision.

Enrolled at FH Upper Austria

Open to enrolled students across the Hagenberg, Linz, Steyr and Wels campuses. Third-country nationals such as Sri Lankan students pay EUR 726.72 per semester plus the EUR 26.20 ÖH fee, and it is this tuition the scholarship halves.

Grade Average Below 2.0

You must have completed your first semester with a grade average below 2.0 on the Austrian scale, where 1 is the best grade. This is a genuine high-achiever threshold, not a participation award.

German Language Course

Successful completion of a German language course is part of the criteria alongside grades. Factor the time and cost of that course into your first-year plan.

schedule

Second Semester Onwards

The scholarship is only available after the first semester, so you must fund your first semester in full before any reduction applies.

account_tree Application Process

1

Apply for admission to an English-taught programme

Check the FH Upper Austria programme list for degrees delivered in English — Hagenberg and Steyr carry most of them. Confirm how your Sri Lankan A/Ls or bachelor's degree map to the entry requirements.

2

Budget for the third-country fee

Plan for EUR 726.72 tuition plus EUR 26.20 ÖH fee per semester, and show living-cost funds for the Austrian student residence permit.

3

Enrol in a German course alongside your degree

Start German early. It is a scholarship condition, it improves your part-time work options in Austria, and it matters for staying on after graduation.

4

Apply through your programme assistant

After your first semester, contact your study programme assistant with your grade average and German course completion to apply for the 50% merit scholarship. There is no central online portal and no fixed deadline, so ask early.

5

Check whether a further fee reduction applies

Third-country nationals with a documented close relationship to Austria can request the reduced EUR 363.36 rate by written application to studienbeitrag@fh-ooe.at. The qualifying categories are narrow, but it costs nothing to check.

Why FH Upper Austria?

Four specialised campuses, a strong applied-research record and close ties to Upper Austria's manufacturing and software industry make FH OÖ one of the country's best-regarded universities of applied sciences. For Sri Lankan students the headline is the fee: an EU engineering or informatics degree for well under LKR 600,000 a year in tuition.
