Aalto University Doctoral Researcher Positions
Aalto is Finland's flagship for technology, business and design — formed in 2010 from the merger of the Helsinki University of Technology, the Helsinki School of Economics and the University of Art and Design — and its doctoral researchers are salaried employees, not fee-paying students. Contracts run roughly €2,700-3,400 a month gross under the universities' collective agreement, rising with progress, with occupational healthcare, pension accrual and holiday entitlement, and Finnish doctoral education charges no tuition to any nationality. Aalto's schools cover electrical engineering, computer science, chemical engineering, engineering, business and arts and design, with strong research in wireless communications, quantum technology, machine learning, materials and energy systems. The Otaniemi campus in Espoo sits inside Finland's densest technology cluster, alongside Nokia, VTT and a large startup ecosystem seeded by Slush and Aalto's own entrepreneurship programmes.

Relevant Master's Degree
A Master's in a field matching the position, with strong results and a research thesis. Sri Lankan applicants typically come from Moratuwa, Peradeniya, Colombo or a prior European Master's.

Most Aalto doctoral funding is tied to advertised positions linked to funded projects and named supervisors. Read the project description closely; applications are ranked against it, not against generic merit.
All Nationalities Eligible
No nationality restriction and no tuition liability. Non-EU appointees apply for a Finnish residence permit; those on employment contracts accrue residence toward permanent status.
English Working Language
All doctoral education at Aalto operates in English, including courses, supervision and the public defence. Finnish is not required; free courses are available.

Contact the supervisor before applying
A short, specific email with your CV, transcripts and thesis abstract, referencing the advertised project, substantially improves your odds. Generic enquiries are not answered.

Interview and offer
Expect a research interview with the supervisor and group, usually online. A successful outcome is an employment offer with a salary and start date, alongside admission to the doctoral programme.
Residence permit
Apply to Migri using the employment contract. Processing from Sri Lanka takes two to three months; Aalto's HR and international services support the paperwork.
