Universitaly + DOV — the documents that gate everything
Two procedural items decide every Italian application. Universitaly pre-enrolment (deadline 10 March) is the portal-side gate that confirms your application to MIUR. The DOV (Dichiarazione di Valore) is the Italian consulate's recognition of your Sri Lankan A/Ls. No university will finalise admission without the DOV, and no embassy will issue the visa without Universitaly. Both must be in motion 8+ months before intake.

Universitaly Pre-Enrolment
Sri Lankan applicants must pre-enrol via the Universitaly portal before the embassy will accept any visa file. Annual deadlines: typically 10 March (degree programmes) / 9 June (architecture / select programmes).

Apply for the Codice Fiscale (Italian tax code) — needed for everything from banking to public services.

Within 8 days of arrival, apply at the local Questura (police HQ) for the Permesso di Soggiorno (residence permit). Card issued in 2–4 months; application receipt serves as legal status.

Universitaly is the Italian Ministry of University and Research's pre-enrolment portal for non-EU applicants. The standard deadline is 10 March for degree programmes, 9 June for some architecture and select programmes. Missing this means no visa. -
Do I need Italian? expand_more
Not for English-taught Master's — over 1,000 run entirely in English at Bocconi, Politecnico, Sapienza and others. For Bachelor's at most public universities, B2 Italian (CILS B2) is required. -
