Course Overview
TU Delft's PhD in Architecture is offered through the Faculty of Architecture and the Built Environment — the world's largest architecture faculty by enrolment and consistently ranked top-3 globally for Architecture and Built Environment (QS by Subject). The 4-year doctorate is unique among architecture PhDs: it follows the Dutch employment-based model, where the PhD candidate is hired as a paid researcher (Promovendus) on a 4-year contract with full social security, pension, and holiday rights — not as a student. Research clusters include Architecture, Urbanism, Building Technology, Management in the Built Environment, and OTB (Research for the Built Environment). The faculty's BK City building is itself an iconic case study, having been rebuilt after a 2008 fire as an experiment in adaptive reuse.
Sri Lankan applicants typically reach TU Delft Architecture after a TU Delft MSc in Architecture (the natural feeder), or after an M.Arch from a top international school. Career Outcomes & PR
Eligible for the Dutch Zoekjaar (Orientation Year) visa — 12 months free job-search residence on completion. TU Delft Architecture PhDs route into senior research / design positions at OMA, MVRDV, UNStudio, BIG, Mecanoo, KCAP, Foster + Partners, and into the urban planning teams at Arcadis, Royal HaskoningDHV, and ARUP Amsterdam (€48,000-€70,000 starting; LKR 16.5M-24M/yr), or into academic posts at TU Delft, ETH Zurich, AA London, Harvard GSD, MIT, and the Bartlett UCL. Sri Lankan returnees gain SLIA Chartered Architect status (with the 4-year PhD counting as research excellence) and join Design Consortium, MICD, Channa Daswatte Associates, Palinda Kannangara Architects, PWA Architects, or set up independent practice.
