Course Overview
Örebro University's Master's Programme in Statistics - Statistical Modelling and Data Science is a two-year, 120-credit programme taught in English, with an option to exit after one year with a 60-credit master's. The first semesters build foundations in data visualisation, programming in R and Python, databases, mathematics and statistical theory; later semesters add econometrics, machine learning, Bayesian statistics and survey sampling, and the programme ends with two theses. Örebro is one of only two Nordic universities whose programme carries the European Master in Official Statistics (EMOS) label, available through an optional 15-credit internship pathway.
This is an ideal next step for Sri Lankan statistics, mathematics and actuarial-science graduates from Colombo, Sri Jayewardenepura, Peradeniya, Kelaniya or Ruhuna who want to become data scientists with genuinely rigorous statistical training. Statistics Sweden (SCB), the national statistics agency, has one of its main offices in Örebro, and banks, pharmaceutical companies, government agencies and consultancies all compete for statisticians. Sweden lets graduates stay up to 12 months after their studies to look for work, and the Örebro University Scholarship covers full tuition for a small number of top applicants.
Entry Requirements
Academic
- check_circle A first-cycle qualification of at least 180 credits, including either at least 90 credits in statistics, or at least 30 credits in statistics plus at least 60 credits in mathematics.
- check_circle Sri Lankan BSc graduates in statistics, mathematics, applied mathematics, actuarial science or data science from Colombo, Sri Jayewardenepura, Peradeniya, Kelaniya or Ruhuna are well matched.
- check_circle Apply through universityadmissions.se (mid-October to January 15) with certified transcripts and degree certificate; an SEK 900 application fee applies.
- check_circle The first tuition instalment of SEK 69,650 is paid before the Swedish residence permit is processed.
English Proficiency
- check_circle English 6 (the Swedish upper-secondary standard) is required.
- check_circle IELTS Academic: 6.5 overall with no section below 5.5, or an equivalent TOEFL iBT result.
- check_circle Waived if you passed English as an A-level subject — universityadmissions.se accepts an A-level in English from Sri Lankan upper-secondary studies, documented with your A/L certificate.

Career Outcomes & PR
Sweden lets non-EU graduates apply for a residence permit of up to 12 months after their studies to look for work or start a business, with a route to a work permit and, over time, permanent residence. Örebro statistics graduates work in banking, pharmaceuticals, government agencies and consulting, and the profession is consistently ranked highly in international job-market comparisons. Employers include Statistics Sweden (SCB), the Nordic banks, AstraZeneca and other life-science companies, and analytics consultancies. Sri Lankan returnees fit data-science, risk-modelling and actuarial roles at Sri Lankan banks and insurers, the Central Bank, the Department of Census and Statistics, and Colombo's analytics firms.
