Course Overview

The MSc in Environmental Sciences at the University of Gothenburg is run through the Department of Biological and Environmental Sciences in the Faculty of Science, and its centre of gravity is chemical risk — ecotoxicology, environmental chemistry, contaminant fate and transport, risk assessment and environmental management. Gothenburg is a genuinely strong place for that: the university hosts the FRAM Centre for Future Chemical Risk Assessment and Management, has long-standing marine and freshwater research capacity through the Kristineberg and Tjärnö field stations on the Swedish west coast, and sits inside a national policy system that treats chemicals regulation seriously. The two-year, 120 ECTS structure combines advanced coursework with a substantial 30 or 60 ECTS research thesis, usually conducted inside a research group or with an external partner.

Sweden's approach to international students is worth understanding before you apply. Tuition for non-EU students is real and not trivial — around SEK 184,000 a year for science programmes — but everything is taught in English, the academic culture is genuinely non-hierarchical (you will call your professor by their first name and be expected to argue with them), and the research training is unusually independent. Applications go through the single national portal at universityadmissions.se with a hard January 15 deadline and a SEK 900 application fee; miss it and you wait a year, because Swedish universities do not run rolling admissions.

The Sri Lankan relevance is direct. Sri Lanka's environmental problems — agrochemical residues and the chronic kidney disease of unknown aetiology question in the dry zone, industrial effluent in the Kelani river basin, coastal contamination following the X-Press Pearl incident, plastics and reef degradation, and the environmental-health consequences of unregulated waste — are exactly the class of problem this degree trains you to assess. There are very few Sri Lankan specialists with formal ecotoxicology and risk-assessment training, and the Central Environmental Authority, the Marine Environment Protection Authority, the National Aquatic Resources Agency and the donor programmes working on these questions all need them. Sweden also grants graduates a 12-month residence permit to seek employment or start a business, which is enough time to convert a thesis project into a first job.

Entry Requirements

description

Academic

  • check_circle A bachelor's degree of at least 180 ECTS with a major in environmental science, biology, chemistry, earth science, or a closely related natural science.
  • check_circle Specified prior coursework in chemistry and biology — Swedish admissions is literal about credit counts, so map your transcript against the stated prerequisites before applying rather than after.
  • check_circle Sri Lankan applicants from Colombo, Peradeniya, Ruhuna, Sri Jayewardenepura, Kelaniya or Wayamba in environmental science, chemistry, zoology, botany or agriculture are the typical profile.
  • check_circle Apply through the national portal at universityadmissions.se by January 15 with a SEK 900 application fee — there is no separate university application and no rolling admission.
  • check_circle Certified and, where required, officially translated transcripts and degree certificates uploaded by the early February document deadline; late documents mean an incomplete application.
  • check_circle A motivation letter and CV where the programme requests them; some Gothenburg science programmes rank purely on academic credits.

English Proficiency

  • check_circle IELTS Academic: 6.5 Overall (no section below 5.5) — this is the Swedish national 'English 6' equivalence.
  • check_circle TOEFL iBT: 90 Overall (min 20 in Writing).
  • check_circle Cambridge C1 Advanced or PTE Academic 62 also accepted.
  • check_circle Swedish admissions recognises prior English-medium study for English 6 exemption only from a specified list of countries and qualifications, which does not generally include Sri Lankan degrees — plan to sit IELTS or TOEFL, and note the test result must be uploaded by the February document deadline.
  • check_circle No Swedish is required for the programme, though free Swedish courses are available and help considerably with the post-study job search.

Career Outcomes & PR

Graduates work in environmental consultancy and risk assessment (AFRY, Ramboll, WSP, Sweco), in regulatory science at the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency and the Swedish Chemicals Agency, at the European Chemicals Agency in Helsinki, in research institutes such as IVL Swedish Environmental Research Institute, in corporate environmental compliance across the chemicals and manufacturing sectors, and onward into doctoral study. Sweden grants graduates a 12-month residence permit to seek work or start a business after completing at least two semesters, and time on a Swedish work permit counts toward permanent residence. Sri Lankan returnees are strongly placed at the Central Environmental Authority, the Marine Environment Protection Authority, the National Aquatic Resources Research and Development Agency, the Industrial Technology Institute, IUCN Sri Lanka and IWMI, and increasingly in the corporate ESG and environmental compliance functions at JKH, MAS Holdings, Brandix, Hayleys and Dilmah.
