MSc Oceanography
University of Southampton
Course Overview
Southampton's MSc Oceanography is taught at the National Oceanography Centre — the UK's principal marine science institution, sitting on the dockside with the research vessels alongside. That is not incidental: the programme includes ship-based fieldwork, and students work with the same instrumentation, data streams and staff as the national research programme. The curriculum spans physical oceanography and ocean circulation, marine biogeochemistry, marine geology, ocean observation and modelling, and the analytical and computational methods behind each.
For a Sri Lankan applicant this is one of the closest fits between a UK degree and a national research need. Sri Lanka sits on an Indian Ocean coastline of roughly 1,340 km with an Exclusive Economic Zone many times its land area, and the live questions — monsoon-driven circulation, fisheries stock assessment, coral bleaching, coastal erosion, sea-level rise and the ocean-plastic burden — all need people trained in ocean observation and modelling rather than general environmental science. Very few Sri Lankan institutions can produce that training domestically.
Entry Requirements
Academic
- check_circle Bachelor's degree at 2:1 (upper second class) or equivalent in a physical or natural science — oceanography, physics, mathematics, geology, environmental science, marine biology, civil engineering or geography.
- check_circle Quantitative preparation matters: mathematics to first-year degree level is expected, and the physical oceanography pathway assumes comfort with calculus and differential equations.
- check_circle Personal statement setting out your interest in ocean science and, where relevant, the regional problem you want to work on.
- check_circle Two academic references and full transcripts.
- check_circle Places are capped and the ship-based fieldwork element limits cohort size — apply early rather than at the July deadline.
English Proficiency
- check_circle IELTS Academic: 6.5 Overall (no band below 6.0).
- check_circle TOEFL iBT: 92 Overall.
- check_circle PTE Academic: 62 Overall.
- check_circle Waived if your Bachelor's was taught and assessed entirely in English at a recognised institution — a Medium of Instruction letter covers most Sri Lankan applicants from Colombo, Peradeniya, Ruhuna and Moratuwa.

Career Outcomes & PR
Graduates go into marine environmental consultancy and offshore survey, offshore wind and marine renewables, hydrographic and oceanographic services, government marine agencies and research institutes, and a substantial share continue to funded PhDs — the National Oceanography Centre is a major doctoral training partner. The UK Graduate Route gives two years of unrestricted post-study work rights. Sri Lankan graduates return into NARA (the National Aquatic Resources Research and Development Agency), the Marine Environment Protection Authority, the Coast Conservation Department, the Department of Fisheries, university marine science departments at Ruhuna and Colombo, and into the coastal-resilience and blue-economy programmes run by the ADB, World Bank and IUCN.
