MSc Molecular Medicine
University of Göttingen
Course Overview
The University of Göttingen sits at the heart of the Göttingen Campus — a research cluster that includes the University Medical Center (UMG), three Max Planck Institutes, and the German Primate Center. Its two-year, entirely English-taught MSc Molecular Medicine is run jointly with the medical faculty and trains biomedical scientists at the interface of basic research and clinical application: molecular oncology, neurodegeneration, cardiovascular biology, immunology, and stem-cell research. As a German public university, Göttingen charges no tuition — only a ~€360 semester contribution that also covers a regional transport pass — making it one of the most cost-efficient research master's available to Sri Lankan graduates.
Sri Lankan applicants with a BSc in Biomedical Science, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Molecular Biology, MBBS, or BSc Nursing are a strong fit; English-medium Sri Lankan degrees are recognised and can waive the IELTS requirement. The programme is laboratory-intensive from semester one, with rotations across UMG and Max Planck labs and a six-month thesis embedded in an active research group — an ideal launchpad into a PhD. Germany grants graduates an 18-month post-study job-seeker visa, and the EU Blue Card pathway follows for those who secure a research or industry role.

Career Outcomes & PR
Graduates qualify for Germany's 18-month post-study job-seeker visa, with the EU Blue Card to follow. Most Molecular Medicine alumni proceed to funded PhD positions across the Göttingen Campus (UMG, Max Planck Institutes) or into R&D at biotech and pharma — BioNTech, Sartorius (headquartered in Göttingen), Boehringer Ingelheim, Bayer, and Qiagen. Clinical-research and medical-affairs roles at CROs are also common. Sri Lankan returnees move into research and lecturing at the Faculty of Medicine (Colombo, Peradeniya, Kelaniya, Sri Jayewardenepura), the Medical Research Institute (MRI), the Sri Lanka Institute of Biotechnology, and diagnostic firms like Asiri and Durdans labs.
