MSc Cardiovascular Science
University of Göttingen
Course Overview
Run by the University of Göttingen with the University Medical Center (UMG) and its DZHK (German Centre for Cardiovascular Research) partner site, the MSc Cardiovascular Science is a two-year, English-taught research master's dedicated entirely to the biology and medicine of the heart and circulation. The curriculum spans cardiac electrophysiology, heart-failure mechanisms, regenerative medicine and engineered heart tissue, vascular biology, and translational imaging — taught by clinician-scientists who run one of Europe's leading cardiovascular research clusters. As a German public university, Göttingen levies no tuition; students pay only the ~€360 semester contribution, which bundles a regional transport ticket.
Sri Lankan graduates with a BSc in Biomedical Science, Physiology, Biochemistry, Pharmacology, MBBS, or BSc Nursing fit the entry profile well, and English-medium Sri Lankan degrees can waive the IELTS requirement via an MOI letter. The programme is heavily lab-based, with rotations and a six-month thesis project embedded in DZHK-funded groups — strong preparation for a cardiovascular PhD or a translational-research career. Germany's 18-month post-study job-seeker visa and the EU Blue Card give clear routes to staying on after graduation.

Career Outcomes & PR
Graduates qualify for Germany's 18-month post-study job-seeker visa and the EU Blue Card. The dominant route is a funded cardiovascular PhD within the DZHK network or UMG; industry roles follow in medical devices and pharma — Bayer, Boehringer Ingelheim, Sartorius (Göttingen), Biotronik, and Abbott's cardiovascular division. Clinical-research and medical-science-liaison roles at CROs are common. Sri Lankan returnees take research and teaching roles at the cardiology and physiology departments of Colombo, Peradeniya, and Kelaniya medical faculties, the National Hospital of Sri Lanka cardiology unit, and the Institute of Cardiology, plus medical-affairs roles at Asiri and Nawaloka groups.
