Course Overview
Malmö University's two-year Media Technology: Strategic Media Development programme leads to a Master of Science in Media Technology and is taught in English. It teaches students to make, critique and strategise digital media technologies, blending hands-on development with strategic thinking. Core courses include Theorizing Media Technology, Prototyping and Innovation, Data Analysis and Visualization, and Research Methodology, ending with a 30-credit master's thesis. The programme is built around industry partnerships and internship opportunities with technology and creative companies in the Malmö–Copenhagen region.
The programme suits Sri Lankan graduates in computer science, information systems, interaction design, game development or media technology (for example from SLIIT, IIT, NSBM, APIIT, Colombo or Moratuwa) who want to move from building digital products to leading digital strategy and innovation. Admission is based entirely on university credits, so a solid degree transcript is the key document. Sweden lets graduates stay up to 12 months after their studies to look for work, and Malmö offers merit-based master's scholarships for a limited number of fee-paying students.
Entry Requirements
Academic
- check_circle A bachelor's degree of at least 180 credits in media technology or a related field such as computer science, informatics, information systems, human-computer interaction, interaction design, media/IT management, game development, or media and communication studies.
- check_circle Sri Lankan BSc graduates in IT, software engineering, information systems, interactive media or game development from SLIIT, IIT, NSBM, APIIT, Colombo or Moratuwa are well matched.

- check_circle Apply through universityadmissions.se (mid-October to January 15) with certified transcripts and degree certificate.
English Proficiency
- check_circle English 6 (the Swedish upper-secondary standard) is required.
- check_circle IELTS Academic: 6.5 overall with no section below 5.5, or an equivalent TOEFL iBT result.
- check_circle Waived if you passed English as an A-level subject — universityadmissions.se accepts an A-level in English from Sri Lankan upper-secondary studies, documented with your A/L certificate.

Sweden lets non-EU graduates apply for a residence permit of up to 12 months after their studies to look for work or start a business, with a route to a work permit and, over time, permanent residence. Graduates work as media strategists, developers, analysts and digital managers across industries. The Öresund region hosts game studios such as King and Massive Entertainment, Sony's Lund operations, IKEA's digital teams and a dense start-up scene in Malmö and Copenhagen. Sri Lankan returnees fit digital-product, growth and innovation roles at Dialog, John Keells, WSO2, 99x and Colombo's media and e-commerce companies.
