Course Overview
Jönköping University's two-year AI Engineering master's leads to a Master of Science (120 credits) with a major in Computer Science, specialisation in Artificial Intelligence Engineering, and is taught entirely in English at the School of Engineering. The curriculum runs from AI fundamentals through machine learning, deep learning and reinforcement learning, with a strong emphasis on applying AI in manufacturing and healthcare. It is designed to produce engineers who can build and deploy AI systems in real organisations, and graduates can also continue to PhD study.
Jönköping is a mid-sized Swedish city at the heart of the Småland manufacturing region and a major Nordic logistics hub, and JU is known for close collaboration with industry. For Sri Lankan computer-science, software-engineering and computer-engineering graduates from Moratuwa, Colombo, SLIIT, IIT, NSBM or Peradeniya, the programme offers an applied AI master's in a country with a strong engineering job market. Sweden lets graduates stay up to 12 months after their studies to look for work or start a business, and a JU scholarship can reduce the tuition invoice for selected fee-paying students.
Entry Requirements
Academic
- check_circle A bachelor's degree of at least 180 ECTS credits (or equivalent), including at least 90 credits in computer science, computer engineering or a related field and at least 15 credits in mathematics.
- check_circle Sri Lankan BSc graduates in computer science, software engineering, computer engineering or data science from Moratuwa, Colombo, SLIIT, IIT, NSBM or Peradeniya are well matched.
- check_circle Apply through universityadmissions.se (mid-October to January 15) with certified transcripts and degree certificate; an SEK 900 application fee applies.
- check_circle The first tuition instalment must be paid before the Swedish residence permit is processed.
English Proficiency
- check_circle English 6 (the Swedish upper-secondary standard) is required.
- check_circle IELTS Academic: 6.5 overall with no section below 5.5, or an equivalent TOEFL iBT result.
- check_circle Waived if you passed English as an A-level subject — universityadmissions.se accepts an A-level in English from Sri Lankan upper-secondary studies, documented with your A/L certificate.

Sweden lets non-EU graduates apply for a residence permit of up to 12 months after their studies to look for work or start a business, with a route to a work permit and, over time, permanent residence. Jönköping AI Engineering graduates work as AI engineers, data scientists and machine-learning specialists, especially in manufacturing and healthcare. The Småland region's industrial employers, Husqvarna's Huskvarna operations, IKEA's logistics network and Swedish tech and automotive companies such as Ericsson and Volvo Cars recruit AI talent. Sri Lankan returnees are in demand for ML-engineering roles at WSO2, Sysco LABS, IFS, Dialog and Colombo's analytics firms.
