Course Overview

The University of Florence's Master's in Mechanical Engineering for Sustainability is taught in English and applies the rigour of classical mechanics to the ecological transition. Students learn to plan, design, check and improve products and machines so that sustainability and circularity are built in across the whole product life cycle, alongside performance, safety and quality. Core areas include mechanical design, applied mechanics, industrial design, machines and energy systems, taught with a multidisciplinary approach aimed at engineers who will lead the transition of industrial products and processes.

Florence sits in one of Italy's strongest mechanical-engineering clusters: Baker Hughes' Nuovo Pignone turbomachinery centre is in the city, and Piaggio, Leonardo and a dense network of precision manufacturers are close by. For Sri Lankan mechanical, production and manufacturing engineering graduates from Moratuwa, Peradeniya, Ruhuna, SLIIT or KDU, the programme adds sustainable-design expertise that export manufacturers and energy companies increasingly need. Students resident in lower-middle-income countries such as Sri Lanka are placed in a low income-based fee band of under €1,000 a year, and Italy's 12-month 'attesa occupazione' permit lets graduates stay on to look for work.

Entry Requirements

Career Outcomes & PR

Non-EU graduates of Italian universities can apply for a 12-month residence permit to look for work ('permesso per attesa occupazione') and convert it to a work permit once hired. Graduates become mechanical engineers who integrate sustainability with performance and safety, in product design, energy systems, turbomachinery, mobility and manufacturing. Employers around Florence include Baker Hughes (Nuovo Pignone), Piaggio, Leonardo and Tuscany's precision-engineering suppliers. Sri Lankan returnees fit design, energy and sustainability-engineering roles with power producers, the Ceylon Electricity Board, export manufacturers such as MAS and Brandix, and engineering consultancies working on renewable-energy projects.
