Course Overview

The University of Florence's International Master's in Management Engineering is a two-year programme taught entirely in English. It trains management engineers with advanced statistical, analytical and numerical skills for manufacturing and service companies, with a focus on innovation and digital transformation: managing advanced production systems, developing new business models and leading change. Students choose between two curricula: Smart Industry, or an International curriculum run with Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts (HSLU) in Switzerland, which includes a year abroad and a double degree.

For Sri Lankan engineering graduates who want to move towards operations, supply-chain or digital-transformation leadership, the programme is a strong alternative to an MBA. Graduates in industrial, mechanical, electrical or production engineering from Moratuwa, Peradeniya, Ruhuna, SLIIT or KDU are the natural fit. Florence's fees are income-based, and students resident in lower-middle-income countries such as Sri Lanka are assigned a notional income that places them in a low fee band of under €1,000 a year. Italy's 12-month 'attesa occupazione' permit lets graduates stay on to look for work in Tuscany's industrial and luxury-goods sector.

Non-EU graduates of Italian universities can apply for a 12-month residence permit to look for work ('permesso per attesa occupazione') and convert it to a work permit once hired. Florence management engineers go into operations, supply-chain, process-improvement and consulting roles in manufacturing and services. Tuscany's employers include Baker Hughes (Nuovo Pignone) in Florence, Piaggio in Pontedera, the Menarini pharmaceutical group, and luxury manufacturers such as Gucci and Ferragamo with major production and logistics operations around Florence. Sri Lankan returnees fit operations and supply-chain leadership roles at MAS, Brandix, Hayleys, Dialog and the island's export manufacturers.
