Course Overview

Aalto University's MSc in Mechanical Engineering is delivered through the Aalto School of Engineering at the Otaniemi campus in Espoo — 20 minutes by metro from central Helsinki. Aalto Engineering is the flagship Finnish engineering school, consistently ranked top-100 globally for Mechanical Engineering, and the academic home of KONE elevators, Wärtsilä marine engines, and Neste process engineering — all of which run major R&D operations within walking distance of the campus. The 2-year MSc offers six specialisation majors: Machine Design, Manufacturing, Mechatronics, Energy Conversion, Solid Mechanics, and Marine Technology. The mandatory Master's thesis (30 ECTS) is typically completed with an industry partner.

Sri Lankan applicants from Mechanical, Aeronautical, Manufacturing, or Production Engineering Bachelor's backgrounds (UoM Mechanical, Peradeniya, Ruhuna, KDU, SLIIT, NSBM) treat this MSc as a route into Nordic and European mechanical engineering. Finland's 2-year post-study job-search residence permit (one of the longest in the EU) and the EU Blue Card pathway (~€3,827/month gross threshold in 2025) make permanent EU mobility realistic. Returnees take senior mechanical engineering and R&D positions at MAS Holdings, MAS Innovation, Brandix, John Keells Engineering, Hayleys, Aitken Spence, CEB, Holcim Lanka, plus the manufacturing arms of larger conglomerates. Chartered Engineer (Sri Lanka) registration via IESL accelerates further.
