MSc in Sustainable Chemical and Process Engineering
Åbo Akademi University
Deadline detail: January 21 (national joint application round, opens January 7)
Course Overview
Åbo Akademi University's Master's Degree Programme in Sustainable Chemical and Process Engineering is the successor to its chemical engineering master's, taught in English over two years and 120 ECTS in Turku, and leading to a Master of Science (Technology). The structure is twelve months of coursework followed by six months of thesis work, with a summer break between the two years. Only twenty study places are offered.
Chemical engineering at Åbo Akademi has genuine international standing: the university hosts the Johan Gadolin Process Chemistry Centre, a long-established research unit whose work on catalysis, biomass conversion, pulping chemistry and process modelling has been recognised as a Finnish centre of excellence. The programme's orientation toward sustainability is not decorative — the Finnish forest-products and chemicals industries have spent two decades on biorefinery, circular-economy and emissions-reduction problems, and the teaching reflects that.
Coursework spans reaction engineering and catalysis, transport phenomena, separation processes, process design and simulation, process control, materials and energy balances, and the sustainability and life-cycle analysis that runs through the programme. The thesis is a substantial six-month research project attached to a group. Some third-party listings advertise named specialisation tracks; the official programme page does not list them, so treat any track names you see elsewhere as unverified.
The fee position is favourable. The sticker price is €12,000 a year, but for students admitted from 2026 onward a €4,000 early-commitment discount applies in year one for accepting and paying by the deadline in the admission letter, and a further €4,000 waiver is applied automatically in year two — bringing the effective cost to roughly €8,000 a year. Admission runs through Finland's national joint application system between 7 and 21 January, once a year, with no rolling entry.
Entry Requirements
Academic
- check_circle A lower university degree equivalent to a Finnish BSc in Chemical Engineering or a corresponding field (SLQF Level 6, UGC-recognised or equivalent), with sufficient prior study in mathematics, physics and chemistry.
- check_circle Minimum GPA of 2.5 on the Finnish scale where the background matches the programme closely, rising to 3.5 where background compatibility is lower. Sri Lankan applicants should read this as a solid Class II Upper at minimum, and higher if coming from an adjacent discipline.
- check_circle Admitted students whose transcripts show gaps may be required to take up to 20 ECTS of bridging studies, which can extend the two years.
- check_circle Only 20 study places are offered, so the application file itself is decisive — submit full module descriptions, laboratory and project work, and any industrial training.
- check_circle Applications go through the Finnish national joint round at Studyinfo.fi (Opintopolku) between 7 and 21 January. There is no second round and no late entry.
English Proficiency
- check_circle IELTS Academic: 6.5 Overall with no band below 5.5.
- check_circle TOEFL iBT: 92 Overall (the Home Edition is accepted).
- check_circle PTE Academic: 62 Overall.
- check_circle Cambridge C1 Advanced at grade A, B or C, or C2 Proficiency with a minimum C1 result.
- check_circle A waiver applies where a Bachelor's or higher was taught and assessed entirely in English in a listed country. The list covers the EU/EEA, Switzerland, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the UK, the USA and a further set added in 2024 — whether Sri Lanka is included could not be confirmed, so check with admissions before deciding to skip the test.
- check_circle No Finnish or Swedish is required for the degree, though basic Finnish materially improves industrial internship prospects.

Career Outcomes & PR
Finland grants graduates a two-year residence permit to look for work or start a business after a degree — one of the longest job-search windows in the EU — and time on a study permit counts toward permanent residence. Åbo Akademi describes graduate destinations only in general terms: research, business development, project management and education. In practice the Finnish process-industry market is the immediate one: Neste in renewable fuels, UPM, Stora Enso and Metsä Group in forest products and biorefining, Kemira in process chemicals, Outotec and Valmet in process equipment, and the pharmaceutical and speciality-chemicals sector. Sri Lankan returnees route into process, production and quality engineering at Tokyo Cement, CIC Holdings, Hayleys' chemicals and plantation processing arms, Ceylon Petroleum, the rubber and coconut processing sector, and water and effluent-treatment engineering — and the sustainability and biorefinery content maps onto Sri Lanka's biomass and agro-processing base more directly than a conventional petrochemical curriculum would.
