MSc International Design Business Management (IDBM)
Aalto University
Course Overview
Aalto University's MSc International Design Business Management (IDBM) is one of the world's most distinctive design-business hybrid master's. The programme draws cohorts of around 60 students from three Aalto schools — Business, Design (formerly UIAH), and Engineering — into a single 2-year multidisciplinary cohort. The pedagogy is project-led: cross-functional student teams work directly with corporate sponsors (Kone, Wärtsilä, Nokia, Marimekko, Iittala, Fiskars) on real-world product innovation challenges.
Sri Lankan applicants from business, engineering, or design backgrounds use IDBM as a route into Finnish and Nordic innovation ecosystems — Helsinki is one of Europe's strongest tech / industrial design corridors, headquartered companies include Nokia (still HQ in Espoo), Supercell (gaming), Wolt (now DoorDash), Rovio (Angry Birds), Kone (elevators), Wärtsilä (marine + energy), and the design heritage of Marimekko, Iittala, Artek. The 2-year curriculum: Year 1 is core IDBM coursework + the IDBM Industry Project (a 1-year industry-sponsored team project); Year 2 includes electives at any of the three Aalto schools plus a master's thesis. Aalto consistently ranks top-10 globally for art & design (QS), and the IDBM has been consistently ranked among the world's top design-management master's by Red Dot and Brand New.
