Master's Programme in Human Computer Interaction and User Experience
Umeå University
Course Overview
Umeå University's Master's Programme in Human Computer Interaction and User Experience is a two-year, 120-credit degree taught in English at the Department of Informatics. It replaced the department's earlier Human-Computer Interaction and Social Media programme, so if you have seen that title in an older listing it is the same lineage under a broader and more employable name. A one-year, 60-credit Magister exit also exists.
The degree sits at the join between design and computing: interaction design and prototyping, user research methods and usability evaluation, service design, cognitive aspects of interface use, accessibility, data-driven UX and the ethics of persuasive design. The degree awarded is a Master of Science with Informatics as the main field and a specialisation in Human-Computer Interaction and User Experience. Umeå is an unusual place to study this — the city also hosts the Umeå Institute of Design, one of the most awarded industrial-design schools in the world, and the design culture spills across the campus.
Tuition for non-EU students is SEK 152,300 a year, SEK 304,600 across the degree, with a first instalment of SEK 76,150 due around 10 May before the August start, plus a SEK 900 application fee. That is roughly LKR 4.87 million a year. Umeå living costs are meaningfully below Stockholm's, which matters over two years, and the Swedish student residence permit carries no formal cap on working hours during study.
The entry bar tightened when the programme was renamed, and this is the thing to check first: Umeå now asks for at least 90 ECTS in Informatics, Computer Science, Information Systems, Cognitive Science or an equivalent field within a Bachelor's of at least 180 ECTS, where the predecessor programme asked for 60. Sri Lankan graduates in Information Systems, Computer Science, IT or a computing-heavy management-information-systems degree from UCSC, Moratuwa, SLIIT, IIT or NSBM are the natural fit — but the credit count is assessed line by line, so send full module descriptions.
Entry Requirements
Academic
- check_circle A Bachelor's degree of at least 180 ECTS (SLQF Level 6, UGC-recognised or equivalent) including at least 90 ECTS in Informatics, Computer Science, Information Systems, Cognitive Science or an equivalent field.
- check_circle Note that this is a tightening from the 60 ECTS required by the predecessor programme — older listings quoting 60 ECTS are out of date.
- check_circle A design or research portfolio is not a formal requirement, but for a UX programme it is the most effective way to differentiate an application: include interface work, user-research write-ups or prototypes.
- check_circle Applications go through Sweden's national portal, universityadmissions.se — the round opens 16 October and closes 15 January, with supporting documents and the SEK 900 application fee due by 1 February.
- check_circle Results are published on 30 March and the first tuition instalment falls around 10 May, which is the practical deadline for arranging funding.
English Proficiency
- check_circle Swedish upper-secondary English 6 (level 2) is the standard, evidenced by one of the following.
- check_circle IELTS Academic: 6.5 Overall with no individual band below 5.5.
- check_circle TOEFL iBT: 90 Overall with Writing 20 or above for tests taken up to 20 January 2026; from 21 January 2026 the revised scale requires 4.5 overall with no section below 4.
- check_circle Cambridge C1 Advanced at 180 or above.
- check_circle Sweden's waiver routes cover a prior degree of at least 60 ECTS taught in English from the EU/EEA, Switzerland or a specified list of English-speaking and Commonwealth countries, upper-secondary education from a designated country list, and a Bachelor's with English as the main subject. Sri Lanka's position on the current list varies between cycles — verify before deciding to skip the test.
- check_circle Swedish is not required for the degree. It does help for user-research work with Swedish participants and for the post-study job search.

Career Outcomes & PR
Sweden grants graduates a twelve-month residence permit to look for work or start a business after completing a degree, converting to a work permit on a qualifying offer. Umeå names UX designers, interaction designers, service designers, usability experts and researchers as the roles this programme leads to. Sweden's product-design culture is a genuine advantage for this specialisation: Spotify, Klarna, King, IKEA, Ericsson, Volvo and Northvolt all run substantial design and research functions, and the country's public-sector digital services set an unusually high accessibility bar that UX graduates work to. Sri Lankan returnees route into product-design and UX roles at WSO2, Sysco LABS, 99X, Virtusa, IFS R&D, Dialog Axiata and the growing product-studio sector in Colombo, where formally trained UX researchers remain scarce relative to demand.
