Course Overview

The Stockholm School of Economics MSc in Finance is a two-year, 120-ECTS programme taught entirely in English with an August start, and it is the school's flagship route into investment banking, private equity, asset management and quantitative finance. Around ninety places are offered; the 2025 intake was 95 students. SSE is the Nordic region's most recruited-from business school, and the Finance programme is where that recruiting pipeline is thickest.

The curriculum is technical: corporate finance and valuation, asset pricing, derivatives, financial econometrics, fixed income, private equity and venture capital, financial modelling, and increasingly sustainable finance — an area where the Nordic institutions have led rather than followed. Teaching is case-heavy and quantitative, with live company and fund projects and a research thesis in the second year.

SSE runs its own admissions rather than going through Sweden's national universityadmissions.se system, with an early round closing 15 November and a final round closing 15 January, decisions by 15 March, and no application fee. Tuition for non-EU students is SEK 360,000 across the two years — SEK 180,000 a year, roughly LKR 5.76 million — billed semester by semester before each term starts.

Entry has two gates a Sri Lankan applicant must plan for. Academically, SSE's live requirement is a Bachelor's carrying at least 60 ECTS in the social sciences (finance, business administration and/or economics) plus at least 30 ECTS of quantitative coursework; older cached versions of the page quote 90 ECTS, so verify the current wording before assuming eligibility. Separately, a GMAT Focus Edition score of 555 or above, or a GRE Quantitative score of 155 or above, is required — that test needs booking months ahead of the January deadline.

Entry Requirements

description

Academic

  • check_circle A Bachelor's degree (SLQF Level 6, UGC-recognised or equivalent) carrying at least 60 ECTS in the social sciences — finance, business administration and/or economics — plus at least 30 ECTS of quantitative coursework, which may sit outside the social sciences.
  • check_circle An older published version of this requirement quotes 90 ECTS of social sciences with half in finance; the live page shows 60/30. Confirm the current wording before applying, because it changes who is eligible.
  • check_circle GMAT Focus Edition of 555 or above (600 or above on the previous format), or a GRE Quantitative score of 155 or above. The only waivers are for Swedish BSc graduates and SSE Riga alumni, so Sri Lankan applicants must sit one of the two.
  • check_circle Applications go through SSE's own portal, not universityadmissions.se. The round opens 1 October, early round closes 15 November, final round 15 January, decisions by 15 March. No application fee.
  • check_circle CV, motivation letter, transcripts and references. Internships in banking, treasury, audit or investment research materially strengthen the file.

English Proficiency

  • check_circle IELTS Academic: 7.0 Overall or above. SSE publishes no sub-score requirement.
  • check_circle TOEFL iBT: 100 Overall on the pre-2026 scale, or 5.0 on the revised scale.
  • check_circle PTE Academic: 68 Overall.
  • check_circle Cambridge C1 Advanced or BEC at grade B or above, or C2 Proficiency at grade C or above.
  • check_circle Waived if your Bachelor's was taught entirely in English — Sri Lankan applicants from English-medium degrees qualify with a Medium of Instruction letter, and IB Diploma holders are exempt.
  • check_circle Swedish is not required for the degree, though it helps for part-time work and the post-study job search in the domestic market.

Career Outcomes & PR

Sweden grants graduates a twelve-month residence permit to look for work or start a business after a degree, converting to a work permit on a qualifying offer. SSE names corporate finance, investment banking, private equity and venture capital, management consulting, portfolio management, fintech, sustainable finance, fund management, sales and trading, and quantitative investment as the destinations for this programme, and profiles a recent graduate working in client relations and capital raising at EQT, the Nordic private-equity house. Across all SSE MSc programmes 91% of graduates are employed within three months and 80% hold an offer before graduating, with finance taking 29% of the cohort and consulting 40%. Stockholm's financial sector — SEB, Nordea, Handelsbanken, Swedbank, EQT, Nordic Capital and a deep fintech cluster including Klarna — is the immediate market. Sri Lankan returnees route into corporate finance, treasury, investment research and fund management at John Keells Holdings, Commercial Bank, HNB, NDB Investment Bank, CT CLSA, Capital Alliance, the Colombo Stock Exchange member firms and the advisory practices of the Big Four.
