Course Overview

The Stockholm School of Economics runs its MSc in Business Innovation over two years and 120 ECTS, entirely in English, with an August start. The programme was previously titled MSc in Business and Management and was renamed — SSE's own alumni pages still refer to graduates of the earlier name — so if you are comparing older rankings or agent listings, treat the two as the same degree.

The focus is on how established firms and new ventures actually create and capture value from innovation: business-model design, strategy under uncertainty, organisational change, digital transformation, brand and marketing innovation, sustainability-driven business models, and entrepreneurship. Teaching is case- and project-based, with company collaborations built into courses, and the intake is deliberately small — around 75 places, with 93 students in the 2025 cohort — so seminars are worked rather than lectured.

SSE sits outside Sweden's national admissions system. It does not use universityadmissions.se; applications go through SSE's own portal in two rounds, an early round closing 15 November and a final round closing 15 January, with decisions by 15 March. There is no application fee, which is unusual and worth knowing. Tuition for non-EU students is SEK 360,000 for the full two years — SEK 180,000 a year, about LKR 5.76 million — billed per semester.

The admission bar has a component many Sri Lankan applicants overlook: SSE requires a GMAT Focus Edition score of at least 555 (or 600 on the previous format), or a GRE Quantitative score of at least 155. That test needs booking months ahead of the January deadline. Academically the programme accepts a Bachelor's in any field provided it carries at least 30 ECTS in business administration, so this is a genuine route for engineers, economists and science graduates as well as business graduates.

Entry Requirements

description

Academic

  • check_circle A Bachelor's degree in any field (SLQF Level 6, UGC-recognised or equivalent) carrying at least 30 ECTS in Business Administration. Exceptionally strong candidates with less business background may still apply.
  • check_circle GMAT Focus Edition of 555 or above, or 600 or above on the previous GMAT format, or a GRE Quantitative score of 155 or above. This is a hard requirement for Sri Lankan applicants — the waivers apply only to Swedish BSc graduates and SSE Riga alumni.
  • check_circle Applications go through SSE's own portal, not through universityadmissions.se. Two rounds: 15 November (early) and 15 January (final), with decisions by 15 March. No application fee.
  • check_circle Around 75 places are offered; the 2025 intake was 93 students, so the programme is small and selective.
  • check_circle CV, motivation letter, transcripts and references. Work experience is not required, but internships or venture experience strengthen the file for an innovation-focused programme.

English Proficiency

  • check_circle IELTS Academic: 7.0 Overall or above. SSE publishes no sub-score requirement.
  • check_circle TOEFL iBT: 100 Overall on the pre-2026 scale, or 5.0 on the revised scale.
  • check_circle Cambridge C1 Advanced or BEC at grade B or above, or C2 Proficiency at grade C or above.
  • check_circle Waived if your Bachelor's was taught entirely in English — Sri Lankan applicants from English-medium degrees qualify with a Medium of Instruction letter, and IB Diploma holders are also exempt.
  • check_circle Swedish is not required for the degree. Basic Swedish helps with part-time work and the post-study job search, and free courses are widely available.

Career Outcomes & PR

Sweden grants graduates a twelve-month residence permit to look for work or start a business after completing a degree, which converts to a work permit on a qualifying offer. SSE names Innovation Manager, Brand Manager, Business Analyst, Management Consultant, Business Developer, Project Manager, Digital Marketing Manager, Sustainability Manager and Entrepreneur as the roles this programme leads to. Across all its MSc programmes SSE reports 91% of graduates employed within three months and 80% holding an offer before graduation, with consulting taking 40%, finance 29% and technology 9%. Stockholm is Europe's densest start-up city per capita — Spotify, Klarna, King and Northvolt all came out of it — and the large Swedish industrials (Ericsson, Volvo, Atlas Copco, H&M, IKEA, Electrolux) recruit heavily from SSE. Sri Lankan returnees route into strategy, business-development and innovation roles at John Keells Holdings, MAS Holdings, Brandix, Hayleys, Dialog Axiata and the Colombo offices of the global consultancies, and the programme suits students intending to build or scale a venture at home.
