Master of Science in Engineering (Data Science)
ZHAW Zurich University of Applied Sciences
Course Overview
The Master of Science in Engineering is Switzerland's consortium master's for the universities of applied sciences — a joint degree offered across ZHAW, BFH, OST, SUPSI, HES-SO and the other public UAS, but studied at your home institution. At ZHAW it runs in English across twelve specialisation profiles, of which Data Science and Computer Science are the two that matter most to a Sri Lankan applicant with a computing or engineering background. The Data Science profile is delivered by ZHAW's Institute for Data Analysis and Process Design at the Winterthur campus.
The structure is 90 ECTS over three semesters full-time, or six part-time. Roughly a third is theoretical and contextual modules shared across the consortium — advanced mathematics, statistics, research methods, and technology-and-society modules taken alongside students from every profile in Switzerland — and the remainder is profile-specific specialisation and a substantial master's thesis. The Data Science work covers machine learning at scale, statistical modelling and inference, data engineering and pipelines, visual analytics, and applied deep learning, with thesis projects usually run in collaboration with an industry partner rather than as pure academic exercises.
Cost is the argument. ZHAW charges CHF 720 per semester in tuition plus a CHF 500 per-semester surcharge for students who were not resident in Switzerland when they started — about CHF 2,440 a year, close to LKR 903,000. Because the degree is only three semesters long, total tuition across the whole master's lands near CHF 3,660. An equivalent data-science master's in the UK, Australia or the US costs between ten and twenty times that in fees alone. What Switzerland costs is living: Zurich and Winterthur are expensive, health insurance is mandatory, and non-EU students may work only 15 hours a week during term, and only after the first six months of residence.
Two intakes run each year — September, with registration from early February to the end of April, and February, with registration from August to the end of October. ZHAW publishes no separate earlier deadline for visa applicants but advises registering as early as possible, since Swiss consular processing from Colombo commonly takes around two months. The programme suits Sri Lankan graduates of computing, electronic engineering, mathematics or statistics degrees from Moratuwa, UCSC, Peradeniya, SLIIT and IIT who want the Zurich technology labour market without a UK-scale fee bill.
Entry Requirements
Academic
- check_circle A Bachelor's degree (SLQF Level 6, UGC-recognised or equivalent) at a good standard — ZHAW asks for the equivalent of a Swiss grade A or B — in a relevant technical field: computer science, software engineering, data science, electronic engineering, mathematics, statistics or a comparable quantitative discipline.
- check_circle Applicants at grade C equivalence may be considered on a case-by-case basis (sur dossier) where they hold at least 10 ECTS of additional post-qualification study.
- check_circle An aptitude assessment for the chosen specialisation profile forms part of admission — for Data Science this means demonstrating programming and statistical competence, not just a matching degree title.
- check_circle GRE is not mandatory but is described as an advantage for applicants holding a degree from outside the EU/EFTA, which includes Sri Lankan applicants — worth sitting if your institution is not well known in Switzerland.
- check_circle Online application with certified, translated transcripts, CV, degree certificate and a motivation letter setting out the thesis direction you intend to pursue.
English Proficiency
- check_circle English at CEFR C1 is the requirement for the consortium master's.
- check_circle IELTS Academic: 7.0 Overall. No sub-scores are published.
- check_circle TOEFL iBT: 95 Overall.
- check_circle Cambridge English C1 Advanced or BEC Higher are also accepted.
- check_circle Waived if you completed your Bachelor's in an English-language programme — Sri Lankan applicants from English-medium computing and engineering degrees qualify with a Medium of Instruction letter.
- check_circle No German is required for the Data Science or Computer Science profiles; among ZHAW's twelve MSE profiles only Civil Engineering carries a German requirement.

Career Outcomes & PR
Switzerland allows non-EU graduates six months to look for work after completing a degree, with conversion to a work permit under cantonal quotas for skilled roles — and data and software roles sit firmly in the shortage category. The Zurich region is one of Europe's densest technology clusters: Google's largest engineering site outside the United States, IBM Research Rüschlikon, Microsoft, Disney Research, and the machine-learning teams at UBS, Swiss Re, Zurich Insurance and Swisscom, alongside consultancies such as Zühlke and a deep fintech and insurtech start-up scene. Because MSE theses are normally run with an industry partner, a meaningful share of graduates convert the thesis project into a job offer. Junior data-scientist and machine-learning-engineer salaries in the Zurich region run CHF 90,000-110,000. Sri Lankan returnees take senior data-science, ML-engineering and analytics-architecture roles at WSO2, IFS R&D, Sysco LABS, Virtusa, 99X, MillenniumIT, Dialog Axiata and LOLC Technologies.
