MSc Biomedical Engineering
University of Basel
Course Overview
The University of Basel runs an English-taught MSc Biomedical Engineering jointly with the Fachhochschule Nordwestschweiz (FHNW) at the Department of Biomedical Engineering on the Allschwil life-sciences campus. Basel is the global pharma capital — Roche and Novartis are both headquartered here, alongside Lonza, the Friedrich Miescher Institute, and a dense biotech / medtech startup cluster. Few other universities can match this concentration of biomedical employers within commuting distance.
The two-year programme covers medical imaging, biomedical signal processing, neural engineering, biomaterials, regulatory affairs, and clinical translation. Sri Lankan applicants with BSc backgrounds in Biomedical, Electrical, Mechanical, Chemical Engineering, or Biotechnology (Moratuwa, Peradeniya, SLIIT, Sri Jayewardenepura) fit well. Tuition is CHF 900/semester (~CHF 1,800/year). The Master's thesis can be completed inside Roche, Novartis, Lonza, or smaller medtech firms in the Allschwil cluster.

Career Outcomes & PR
Basel BME graduates feed directly into Switzerland's life-sciences corridor: Roche, Novartis, Lonza, Sonova, Straumann (dental implants), Ypsomed (drug delivery), and the broader Allschwil medtech cluster. Switzerland's 6-month post-graduation permit and STEM-exempt work-permit conversion under the non-EU quota applies. Starting salaries: CHF 90k–110k. Sri Lankan returnees are well-placed for medical-device, biotech, and pharma roles at Hemas Hospitals, Asiri, Lanka Hospitals, and emerging biotech startups; also competitive for international postdoctoral routes.
