MSc in Data Sciences & Business Analytics
CentraleSupélec
Deadline detail: Admissions run in rounds from the autumn through the spring — apply in an early round from Sri Lanka, since the Campus France procedure and the visa both sit after the offer
Course Overview
The MSc in Data Sciences & Business Analytics is delivered jointly by CentraleSupélec and ESSEC Business School — one of France's grandes écoles of engineering and one of its leading business schools — and the joint structure is the whole point. CentraleSupélec supplies the technical half: machine learning, statistical learning theory, optimisation, big data architectures, deep learning and the computing that makes it work. ESSEC supplies the commercial half: how analytics changes a firm's decisions, pricing, marketing and operations, and how to present a model to people who will not read the code. The degree finishes with a substantial company internship, which in France is a structured, paid and legally framed part of the qualification rather than an optional extra.
It is a selective programme with a strongly international cohort and it is taught in English across France, with a Singapore option built into the delivery. The recruiting outcome is what makes it well known: French and European employers treat CentraleSupélec's engineering brand and ESSEC's business brand as a combination that is genuinely hard to find elsewhere, and the programme's graduates land in consulting, banking, technology and industry rather than in a narrow analytics niche.
For a Sri Lankan applicant the practical case is about cost and immigration in combination. The full programme fee is materially below what an equivalent UK or US data science master's costs, France grants master's graduates the APS — a 12-month temporary residence permit to look for work or start a business — and France's tech and consulting sector recruits actively in English at this level. Sri Lanka produces well-prepared candidates for this degree through Moratuwa, Peradeniya, Colombo, SLIIT and IIT, and the local product and analytics companies mean many applicants arrive with real engineering experience. The honest caveat is that the technical bar is high: this is not an introductory analytics course, and applicants without solid mathematics and programming find the first term brutal.
Entry Requirements
Academic
- check_circle A Bachelor's or Master's degree in engineering, computer science, mathematics, statistics, physics, economics or a similarly quantitative discipline.
- check_circle Solid grounding in linear algebra, calculus, probability and statistics is essential; programming ability in Python is expected on arrival rather than taught from scratch.
- check_circle Sri Lankan applicants from Moratuwa (computer science, engineering), Peradeniya (engineering), Colombo (statistics, mathematics, computer science), SLIIT, IIT, NSBM and APIIT are the typical academic backgrounds.
- check_circle GMAT or GRE is normally part of the application, with the quantitative section weighted heavily — reported average GMAT scores for admitted students sit around the high 600s.
- check_circle Two recommendation letters — one academic and one professional is the recommended combination — plus official transcripts covering every academic term since school.
- check_circle Essays and an interview form part of the assessment; the admissions board explicitly reviews both technical and non-technical evidence.
- check_circle A non-refundable application fee of €120 applies, and a €5,000 deposit is due within two weeks of an offer, deducted from the total fee.
- check_circle Sri Lankan applicants apply through the Campus France 'Études en France' procedure including an interview at Campus France Colombo before the visa; begin this as soon as an offer arrives, since it adds weeks to the timeline.
English Proficiency
- check_circle IELTS Academic: 6.5-7.0 Overall is the usual requirement for this cohort.
- check_circle TOEFL iBT: 90-100 Overall.
- check_circle The GMAT or GRE itself carries some weight as evidence of English ability, but a separate English test is normally still expected.
- check_circle A waiver may be available where your entire prior degree was taught and examined in English — Sri Lankan applicants from English-medium engineering and computing degrees should request written confirmation with a Medium of Instruction letter rather than assuming it.
- check_circle The whole programme is taught in English and French is not required for admission or graduation.
- check_circle French at A2-B1 makes an enormous difference to the internship search and to the 12-month post-study job hunt, because a large share of French employers still interview and work in French. Free French courses are available and are worth taking seriously from day one.

Career Outcomes & PR
France grants master's graduates the APS, a 12-month temporary residence permit to seek work or start a business, convertible to a work permit once you hold a qualifying offer, and the EU Blue Card route opens from there for movement across the union. Graduates go into data science, machine learning engineering, quantitative analysis and analytics consulting at the strategy and technology consultancies (BCG Gamma, McKinsey QuantumBlack, Capgemini Invent, Accenture, the Big Four analytics practices), at the French and European banks and insurers (BNP Paribas, Société Générale, AXA, Crédit Agricole), at the large technology and industrial employers (Criteo, Dataiku, Doctolib, Amazon, Google, Airbus, Thales, Schneider Electric, LVMH and the luxury groups' analytics teams), and into start-ups in the Station F ecosystem. The internship is the primary conversion channel into a first job, so treat it as recruitment rather than coursework. Sri Lankan returnees enter senior analytics and machine learning roles at WSO2, IFS, 99X, Dialog Axiata, John Keells, Commercial Bank, HNB, MAS Holdings and Brandix, and at the Colombo delivery centres of the international consultancies.
