Course Overview
RWTH Aachen's MSc Data Science is one of Germany's strongest English-taught data science master's, delivered jointly by the Department of Computer Science and the Faculty of Mathematics. RWTH sits among Germany's top three technical universities and is ranked top-100 globally for Computer Science (QS subject 2026). The two-year programme is 100% English-medium and combines computer-science foundations (machine learning, distributed systems, databases, big data) with mathematical depth (probability, statistics, optimisation, numerical analysis). Students choose application electives in bioinformatics, computer vision, NLP, financial data science, social network analysis or industrial process analytics, and complete a six-month thesis with a Fraunhofer institute or industry partner.
Aachen sits at the Dutch-Belgian-German tri-border and hosts the largest applied-research cluster in Europe — 14 Fraunhofer institutes on the RWTH campus alone, including Fraunhofer FIT (Applied Information Technology) and the Fraunhofer Institute for Production Technology. Industry partners include Ford Cologne, Microsoft Aachen, RWE, e.GO Mobile, plus the Düsseldorf/Cologne corporate IT cluster (Vodafone, Henkel, Bayer, Telekom). North Rhine-Westphalia remains tuition-free at the state level for international students.
Entry Requirements
Academic
- check_circle Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Data Science, Physics, Engineering or a closely-related discipline — first-class or upper-second (Sri Lankan First or Second Upper, GPA 3.3+).

- check_circle Preliminary documentation (VPD) from uni-assist for all Sri Lankan bachelor's degrees.

- check_circle CV evidencing programming projects, internships, or research.
English Proficiency

- check_circle TOEFL iBT: 90 Overall.
- check_circle Cambridge English C1 Advanced: 180 Overall.
- check_circle Waived if your bachelor's degree was taught and assessed entirely in English — Sri Lankan applicants from UoC UCSC, UoM, UoP, SLIIT, NSBM, NIBM, IIT and ICBT qualify with an MOI letter from the awarding university.

Germany offers an 18-month Job Seeker Visa post-graduation, leading to an EU Blue Card at the STEM threshold (~€43,800/yr in 2025) and PR in 21-33 months. RWTH MSc Data Science graduates routinely land roles at Ford Cologne, Microsoft Aachen, SAP, Bayer (Leverkusen), Henkel, Vodafone Düsseldorf, RWE, the Fraunhofer institutes, plus Aachen and Cologne startup tech firms. Median starting salary for data scientists in NRW is €58,000-€68,000.
