Course Overview
Computational Sciences at Freie Universität Berlin is a four-semester, 120-credit-point Master of Science taught entirely in English, and it occupies a specific and increasingly valuable niche: it trains people who can build and run large-scale simulations of physical and chemical systems, rather than people who can only run someone else's software. The curriculum is built in four components — a synchronisation phase that brings a mixed-background cohort onto common ground, a scientific computing core covering numerical methods, high-performance computing, data analysis and modelling, a specialisation in molecular sciences, geosciences or atmospheric sciences, and the master's thesis.
FU Berlin's Dahlem campus is one of the strongest research environments in continental Europe for exactly this work — the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science sits alongside chemistry, physics, biology, geosciences and meteorology, and the Berlin research landscape adds the Zuse Institute, the Max Planck institutes and a large computational research community across three other universities. FU Berlin is one of Germany's Universities of Excellence, and the Berlin University Alliance means you can take courses across the city's institutions.
The financial position is the headline for a Sri Lankan applicant. German public universities charge no tuition, including to non-EU students — the only recurring payment is a semester contribution of around €359 that includes a Berlin public transport pass, which is itself worth most of the fee. A two-year master's from a German Excellence university therefore costs you living expenses and paperwork, not tuition. Germany then grants graduates an 18-month residence permit to look for qualified work, the longest post-study window in continental Europe, and the EU Blue Card salary threshold for shortage occupations in IT and science is comparatively accessible. The realistic barriers are not financial: the entry requirement is specific about prior credits, the application deadline is early and rigid, and you must prove funds in a blocked account before the visa is issued.
Entry Requirements
Academic
- check_circle A Bachelor's degree in chemistry, physics, geological sciences, meteorology, geographical sciences, mathematics, computer science or an engineering discipline, with the specified minimum credit volumes in the relevant subject areas.
- check_circle Mathematics is the binding constraint — the programme expects a solid grounding in calculus, linear algebra, differential equations and numerical methods, and applicants short on these are the ones rejected regardless of overall grades.
- check_circle Programming experience is expected; the degree assumes you can already write code and teaches you to write scientific code well.
- check_circle Sri Lankan applicants with a BSc from Colombo, Peradeniya, Kelaniya, Sri Jayewardenepura, Ruhuna or Jaffna in physics, chemistry, mathematics, computational or applied sciences, or an engineering degree from Moratuwa or Peradeniya, are the standard profiles.
- check_circle Sri Lankan qualifications must be assessed for German recognition — check your degree against the anabin database and, if required, obtain a Statement of Comparability from the ZAB. Do this before the application window opens, not during it.
- check_circle Applications for international qualifications usually route through uni-assist, which charges a handling fee and takes several weeks to process documents; factor that into the deadline.
- check_circle A German national visa for study purposes is required, applied for at the German Embassy in Colombo. Proof of funds is normally shown through a blocked account (Sperrkonto) at the threshold set annually in German law — verify the current figure rather than an older one.
- check_circle Certified copies and certified German or English translations of transcripts and degree certificates are required.
English Proficiency
- check_circle The stated English requirement is CEFR B1 with an official language certificate — which is unusually low by international standards and is one reason this programme is worth a close look.
- check_circle IELTS Academic: 5.5-6.0 evidences B1 comfortably; TOEFL iBT 72-80 does likewise. Many applicants submit 6.5 anyway.
- check_circle Applicants who completed a prior degree taught and examined entirely in English can normally satisfy the requirement with a Medium of Instruction letter from their Sri Lankan university — request written confirmation from the programme office.
- check_circle The entire degree, including the thesis, is taught and assessed in English. German is not required for admission or graduation.
- check_circle German at A2-B1 is nonetheless close to essential for daily life in Berlin, for part-time work, and above all for the 18-month post-study job search — the technical labour market runs partly in English but administrative life does not. Free and heavily subsidised German courses are available to enrolled students.

Career Outcomes & PR
Germany grants graduates of a German university an 18-month residence permit to look for qualified employment — the longest post-study window in continental Europe — and a qualifying job converts it into a work permit or an EU Blue Card, with permanent residence available after a defined period of qualified employment and German language attainment. Computational sciences graduates work in scientific software and simulation, high-performance computing, computational chemistry and materials in the pharmaceutical and chemical industries, climate and weather modelling, energy system modelling, quantitative research, and machine learning roles where a physical-modelling background is valued. Berlin employers include the research institutes (Max Planck, Fraunhofer, Helmholtz, the Zuse Institute), the pharmaceutical and chemical sector (Bayer, BASF, Merck), the energy and mobility industries, and a large technology start-up scene. A substantial share continue to a funded PhD, which in Germany is usually a salaried research position rather than a scholarship. Sri Lankan returnees are placed in modelling and analytics roles at the Department of Meteorology, the Disaster Management Centre, the National Building Research Organisation and IWMI Colombo, in university teaching and research at Colombo, Peradeniya and Moratuwa, and in technical roles at WSO2, IFS, 99X and the Colombo research and engineering centres of international firms.
