Course Overview

Purdue's MS in Aerospace Engineering is delivered through the School of Aeronautics and Astronautics — the cradle of US aerospace education, with more astronauts among its alumni than any other public university (24 NASA astronauts including Neil Armstrong and Gus Grissom). Purdue is consistently ranked top-5 in the US for Aerospace Engineering (US News). The 2-year taught Master's offers a thesis or non-thesis option across six concentration areas: Aerodynamics, Aerospace Systems, Astrodynamics and Space Applications, Dynamics and Control, Propulsion, and Structures and Materials. The school operates a wind tunnel complex, the Maurice J. Zucrow Laboratories (the largest academic propulsion facility in the US), and partnership programmes with NASA, the Air Force Research Laboratory, and the Naval Surface Warfare Center.

Sri Lankan applicants typically reach Purdue Aerospace after a strong UoM Department of Mechanical Engineering or Department of Civil Engineering Bachelor's, or after a year of industry experience at SriLankan Airlines Engineering or the Sri Lanka Air Force. Purdue is more accessible for Sri Lankan applicants than the East Coast Ivies — the publicly-funded model means out-of-state tuition (~USD 35,000/yr) is below MIT / Stanford / Caltech, and the Indiana location keeps living costs at USD 12,000-15,000/yr. Graduates qualify for F-1 to OPT (24-month STEM extension on top of the standard 12 months). Sri Lankan returnees route into senior engineering positions at SriLankan Airlines Engineering, the Sri Lanka Air Force, the Sri Lanka Institute of Aeronautics, Helitours, and into international roles at Boeing, Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman, NASA contractors, and Indian aerospace primes (HAL, ISRO partner companies).

Career Outcomes & PR

F-1 visa with 12-month OPT plus 24-month STEM OPT extension gives 3 years of US work authorisation after graduation. Purdue Aerospace MS grads route into engineering positions at Boeing (Seattle), Lockheed Martin (Fort Worth / Denver), Northrop Grumman, GE Aviation Cincinnati, Pratt & Whitney Connecticut, SpaceX (Hawthorne / Boca Chica), Blue Origin Texas, NASA contractor roles (JPL Pasadena, Goddard Maryland), and the major US airlines' engineering divisions (USD 85,000-110,000 starting; LKR 27M-35M/yr). Sri Lankan returnees route into senior engineering positions at SriLankan Airlines Engineering and Maintenance, the Sri Lanka Air Force Engineering Wing, Sri Lanka Institute of Aeronautics, Helitours, and into Chartered Engineer (Sri Lanka) registration via EngSL.
