MEng Software Engineering
University of Manchester
Course Overview
University of Manchester's Department of Computer Science is one of the oldest in the world — birthplace of the first stored-program computer (Manchester Baby, 1948) and home to Alan Turing's pioneering work. The 4-year MEng Software Engineering is an integrated Master's accredited by the British Computer Society (BCS) — meaning graduates qualify for Chartered IT Professional (CITP) status after the appropriate post-graduation experience. The course covers software architecture, distributed systems, machine learning, cybersecurity, agile development, and includes an optional industrial placement year (Year 3) — students who take it typically earn £24,000-32,000 during placement.
Sri Lankan applicants choose Manchester over London-based universities because the tuition is ~25% lower than Imperial / UCL, Manchester's cost of living is ~40% below London, and the city has Northern England's largest tech ecosystem — MediaCity, Booking.com's UK base, BBC R&D, and a dense Sri Lankan / South Asian alumni network at Cisco, IBM, BAE Systems Digital, and major fintech firms. The MEng is also a step above a BSc for UK employer signalling at major banks (Goldman Sachs, JPMorgan, HSBC tech).
