MD Doctor of Medicine and Surgery
University of Malta
Course Overview
University of Malta's MD Doctor of Medicine and Surgery is the country's only medical degree, delivered through the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery in partnership with Mater Dei Hospital (Malta's main teaching hospital). The 5-year primary medical qualification is listed on the EU Directive 2005/36/EC register, which means the MD is automatically recognised across all EU/EEA member states for medical practice — a rare advantage at this fee level. All teaching is in English. The programme combines pre-clinical basic sciences (Years 1-2) with clinical rotations at Mater Dei from Year 3 onward.
Sri Lankan applicants choose Malta over UK / Australia medical schools for tuition that is roughly a third of UK international fees (€27,000/yr versus £35,000-£50,000/yr), with the same EU-recognised qualification. Entry is highly competitive — A-Level Chemistry plus Biology or Physics at grade A is the standard expectation. Sri Lankan returnees route through the Sri Lanka Medical Council (SLMC) Provisional Registration process: the Malta MD is foreign-qualified for SLMC purposes, requiring the ERPM (Examination for Registration to Practise Medicine) for full local registration. Confirm SLMC current foreign-qualifications list before applying.
