BSc (Hons) Nursing Studies
University of Malta
Course Overview
University of Malta's BSc (Hons) Nursing Studies is delivered through the Faculty of Health Sciences in partnership with Mater Dei Hospital and Malta's primary-care health centre network. The 4-year programme is EU Directive 2005/36/EC compliant, meaning the qualification leads to automatic recognition as a general-care nurse across all EU / EEA member states — a meaningful difference from non-EU nursing programmes. Clinical placements run from Year 1, totalling roughly 2,300 hours across acute, community, and specialist settings (medical, surgical, mental health, paediatrics, maternity).
Sri Lankan A-Level applicants from Biological Science or Bio-Maths streams choose Malta nursing for the EU-wide recognition, English-medium delivery, and lower tuition tier (€10,000-€11,000/yr Bachelor's) compared to UK / Australia nursing programmes. Graduates qualify for Malta's 6-month post-study job-search residence permit and are eligible to register with the Maltese Nursing and Midwifery Council, opening practice rights across the EU. Sri Lankan returnees route through the Sri Lanka Nursing Council foreign-qualification recognition process — EU Directive nursing degrees are commonly recognised, but confirm the current SLNC listing before applying.
