Course Overview
Massey's Master of Renewable Energy is delivered through the School of Food and Advanced Technology on the Palmerston North campus — one of New Zealand's three main universities and the only one offering a dedicated taught Master's in renewable energy. The programme is 180 credits (12-month accelerated route for cognate Bachelor's holders, 18-24 months for non-cognate) and covers solar PV systems, wind energy engineering, bioenergy and biofuels, geothermal energy (a New Zealand specialty given its geothermal infrastructure on the North Island), hydro-power, energy storage, smart grids, and energy economics and policy. Students complete a 60-credit research thesis or industry project — Massey partners with Meridian Energy, Mercury, Contact Energy, Transpower NZ, and the NZ Bioenergy Association.
Sri Lankan applicants typically reach Massey Renewable Energy after a strong Bachelor's in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Environmental Science, Physics, or Chemistry from the University of Moratuwa, University of Peradeniya, University of Ruhuna Faculty of Engineering, or KDU. New Zealand's renewable-energy mix is uniquely instructive for Sri Lankan applicants — 85%+ of NZ electricity is already renewable (hydro, geothermal, wind), making it a living case study for the Sri Lankan Sustainable Energy Authority's 70% renewable target by 2030. The 3-year Post-Study Work Visa plus Engineering on the Green List makes residence achievable within 3-4 years post-graduation. Academic
- check_circle Sri Lankan Bachelor's (Hons) in Engineering (Electrical, Mechanical, Chemical, Civil), Physics, Chemistry, or Environmental Science — minimum GPA 2.8 / Lower Second-Class.
- check_circle Cognate Bachelor's holders may complete the programme in 12 months; non-cognate applicants take 18-24 months including bridging modules.
- check_circle Strong fundamentals in mathematics, thermodynamics, and electromagnetics at Bachelor's level.
- check_circle Two academic / professional references; CV; statement of purpose (500 words).
- check_circle Industry experience in the energy or environmental sector is highly valued.
English Proficiency

- check_circle TOEFL iBT: 90 Overall (min 21 in Writing).
- check_circle PTE Academic: 58 Overall.
- check_circle Waived if your Bachelor's was taught and assessed entirely in English at a recognised institution for at least 3 years — most Sri Lankan engineering applicants qualify.

Post-Study Work Visa of 3 years gives graduates strong NZ labour-market access. Engineering is on NZ's Green List — residence-from-work pathway available after 24 months. Massey Renewable Energy grads route into engineering positions at Meridian Energy (NZ's largest renewable IPP), Mercury, Contact Energy, Transpower NZ, the NZ Bioenergy Association, plus consulting roles at Beca, Tonkin + Taylor, AECOM NZ, WSP NZ, and the NZ National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research (NIWA) — NZD 80,000-110,000 starting (LKR 15M-21M/yr). Engineering New Zealand Chartered Professional Engineer (CPEng) registration is the standard practice credential.
