MMath Master of Mathematics
University of Waterloo (Faculty of Mathematics)
Course Overview
The MMath at Waterloo is the umbrella research master's degree across the Faculty of Mathematics — the largest mathematics faculty in the world, with around 8,500 students. Specialisations include Pure Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, Combinatorics & Optimization, Statistics & Actuarial Science, Computational Mathematics, and Quantitative Finance. Each is run by a distinct department but shares the MMath credential, and admissions are department-specific.
Most full-time MMath students follow the Thesis Option — 4 courses plus a research thesis, supervised by a faculty member, typically 16-24 months. Funding is the headline detail for Sri Lankan applicants: admitted thesis students are almost always offered a funding package (CAD 22,000-30,000/year) combining Teaching Assistantships, Research Assistantships, and Graduate Scholarships, which can fully offset tuition and a meaningful chunk of living costs. This is one of the few North American master's programs where the funding model genuinely makes the degree financially viable for self-funded international students.
Entry Requirements
Academic
- check_circle Bachelor's degree in Mathematics, Statistics, Computer Science, Engineering, or a closely related quantitative field — minimum 78% / B+ average in your final two years. Sri Lankan applicants typically need a strong Second Upper or First Class from Peradeniya, Moratuwa, Colombo, SLIIT, or comparable.
- check_circle Three academic references; statement of interest and CV; for thesis option a confirmed (or strongly indicated) supervisor is highly recommended before applying.
- check_circle GRE is not required by most departments but is recommended for Pure Math and Combinatorics & Optimization.
- check_circle Research-track applicants without a confirmed supervisor can still apply — admissions committees match strong candidates to faculty interest areas.
English Proficiency
- check_circle IELTS Academic: 7.0 Overall (min 6.5 in Writing and Speaking) — required by most MMath departments.
- check_circle TOEFL iBT: 90 Overall (min 25 Speaking, 25 Writing).
- check_circle Waived if your undergraduate degree was taught entirely in English.

Career Outcomes & PR
Waterloo MMath graduates split three ways: PhD admission (Toronto, Waterloo, Stanford, MIT, ETH Zürich — Waterloo's PhD placement is exceptional), quant/tech industry (Jane Street, Citadel, Two Sigma recruit directly from Combinatorics & Optimization and Pure Math streams), and Canadian industry (RBC, Scotiabank quant teams, Shopify data science, Sun Life actuarial). Thesis MMath grads are eligible for the 3-year PGWP, and the research-heavy profile lines up cleanly with Express Entry once a year of post-grad work is logged. Median post-MMath industry salaries sit around CAD 95,000 in Toronto and USD 150,000+ for quant roles in NYC.
