Master of Education (MEd)
University of Toronto (Ontario Institute for Studies in Education)
Course Overview
OISE — the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education — is consistently ranked the #1 graduate school of education in Canada and top 10 globally (QS 2025). The MEd is a coursework-and-research master's offered across four departments: Curriculum, Teaching & Learning; Leadership, Higher & Adult Education; Applied Psychology & Human Development; and Social Justice Education.
Sri Lankan applicants typically come from three streams: serving teachers and principals upgrading credentials, Ministry of Education / NIE staff using it as a research credential, and ed-tech / NGO professionals (Room to Read, UNESCO, World Bank Education Global Practice) building research depth. The Comparative, International & Development Education concentration is particularly relevant to South Asian and Sri Lankan applicants.
Important: the MEd is NOT a teacher-certification pathway. Sri Lankans wanting to teach in Ontario state schools need the separate Master of Teaching (MT) or Consecutive Education programmes, which lead to OCT (Ontario College of Teachers) registration. The MEd leads instead into education leadership, policy, ed-tech, international school administration, and doctoral pathways.
