Course Overview

Tilburg Law School's LLM in International Business Law runs one intensive year, taught entirely in English, and carries the subtitle that tells you what makes it current: Digital Innovation in Commerce and Finance. Rather than teaching cross-border commercial law as a static body of doctrine, the programme is built around what digitalisation is doing to it — platform regulation, fintech and payments, data governance, digital contracting and smart contracts, competition law in digital markets, and the EU regulatory apparatus that increasingly sets the global baseline for all of it.

The core covers international and European commercial contracting, corporate law and governance, competition law, international dispute resolution and arbitration, and financial regulation, taught with the practical, problem-based method Dutch law schools use. Tilburg Law School is consistently among the strongest law faculties in the Netherlands and has a particularly deep group in law and technology — its Tilburg Institute for Law, Technology, and Society is one of the best-known research centres in that field in Europe. Class sizes are small enough for genuine supervision, and the cohort is heavily international, which for a course about cross-border commerce is part of the education.

For Sri Lankan lawyers this is a well-matched one-year investment. An LLB from Colombo, Peradeniya, Jaffna or an accredited external programme, plus an Attorney-at-Law qualification, plus a European commercial LLM, is a strong combination for exactly the work that is growing in Colombo: cross-border contracting for the export sector, banking and finance documentation, fintech and payments regulation under the Central Bank's frameworks, data protection under the Personal Data Protection Act, foreign investment structuring, and international commercial arbitration. Be clear that a Dutch LLM does not admit you to practise in the Netherlands — Dutch bar admission requires a Dutch law degree — and it does not substitute for Sri Lanka Law College admission either. What it does is make you the person in the room who understands the EU regulatory regime the counterparty is operating under.

Entry Requirements

description

Academic

  • check_circle A Bachelor's degree in law (LLB) or a closely related degree with a substantial law component, from a recognised university.
  • check_circle Tilburg assesses the transcript for coverage of contract law, corporate or commercial law and an introduction to international or European law; applicants from adjacent disciplines with strong legal coursework are considered case by case.
  • check_circle Sri Lankan applicants with an LLB from Colombo, Peradeniya, Jaffna, Kotelawala Defence University or an accredited external University of London LLB are the standard profile; Attorneys-at-Law with practice experience are strong candidates.
  • check_circle A grade average equivalent to a Dutch 7 or better — roughly a second-class upper — is the realistic bar.
  • check_circle Motivation letter, CV, transcripts, degree certificate and academic or professional references. The motivation letter should be specific about the commercial or regulatory area you intend to work in.
  • check_circle Non-EU applicants apply by 1 April for the September start; Tilburg then applies for your residence permit through the Dutch immigration service, which is efficient but requires the proof-of-funds deposit well ahead of the start date.
  • check_circle You must show funds covering tuition plus the statutory living-cost amount for the residence permit; the university handles the application on your behalf as a recognised sponsor.

English Proficiency

  • check_circle IELTS Academic: 6.5 Overall with a minimum of 6.0 in each component; law programmes often expect 7.0 in writing — check the published requirement for the intake.
  • check_circle TOEFL iBT: 90-100 Overall.
  • check_circle Cambridge English: C1 Advanced.
  • check_circle Waived where your Bachelor's degree was taught and examined entirely in English at a recognised institution — Sri Lankan applicants from English-medium LLB programmes submit a Medium of Instruction letter from the registrar. Confirm with Tilburg admissions in writing before you skip the test, as law programmes apply the waiver more conservatively than other faculties.
  • check_circle The programme is taught, assessed and examined entirely in English; Dutch is not required at any stage.
  • check_circle Free and low-cost Dutch classes are available through the university language centre, and basic Dutch is useful for daily life and for any legal work in the Dutch market, though the international commercial bar in Amsterdam works largely in English.

Career Outcomes & PR

The Netherlands offers non-EU graduates of Dutch universities an orientation year — the zoekjaar — a twelve-month residence permit with unrestricted work rights, which can be applied for within three years of graduating and converts to a highly skilled migrant permit on employment. That permit has a reduced salary threshold for recent graduates, which is what makes the Dutch route genuinely workable rather than nominally available. Graduates work in the international commercial practices of Dutch and global law firms in Amsterdam and Rotterdam, in-house legal and compliance functions at multinationals and financial institutions, regulatory and policy roles in the EU institutions and national regulators, fintech and platform companies, and arbitration and dispute-resolution practice. Note that admission to the Dutch bar requires a Dutch law degree, so this LLM is a specialist and in-house qualification in the Netherlands rather than a practising one. For Sri Lankan returnees, admission as an Attorney-at-Law runs through Sri Lanka Law College and the Supreme Court, unaffected by a foreign LLM — but the LLM is directly valuable in the corporate and banking legal departments at John Keells, Hayleys, Aitken Spence, Dialog and the listed banks, in the Colombo commercial bar, in Central Bank and SEC regulatory work, in the data-protection compliance function created by the Personal Data Protection Act, and in the cross-border contracting that the apparel, tea and IT export sectors run on daily.
