LLM International and European Law — Business Law
Radboud University Nijmegen
Deadline detail: April 1 (September intake, non-EU) / November 1 (February intake, non-EU)
Course Overview
Business Law is one of the four specialisations of Radboud University's LLM in International and European Law — the only English-taught master's the Faculty of Law runs. It is the commercial track: EU internal-market and competition law, corporate and financial regulation, and the legal framework multinationals operate within, taught over one year and 60 EC with an 18 EC thesis. A word of warning on names: Radboud also runs programmes titled 'Business and Law' as a dual master and a research master, and both of those are taught in Dutch. The English-taught option is this Business Law specialisation.
The cohort is small — around twenty-nine students — with ten to twelve contact hours a week, which means seminar-style teaching rather than lectures. The specialisation is aimed at students heading into corporate legal practice, in-house counsel roles, financial regulation and compliance, and the EU institutions that write the rules those functions apply. Radboud names the European Commission and the European Bank among the destinations its graduates enter.
Nijmegen sits about ninety minutes from Brussels and two hours from The Hague, and the Netherlands is the corporate-structuring hub of the EU: a large share of European holding companies, and much of the continent's cross-border M&A documentation, runs through Dutch law. Studying EU business law from inside that jurisdiction is a substantively different experience from studying it elsewhere.
Tuition for non-EEA students is €18,873 for 2026-27. That is high for continental Europe and needs precise budgeting, but the Netherlands then offers the orientation year — twelve months of full labour-market access after graduation — which is a materially better post-study position than most EU states. The natural applicant is a Sri Lankan LLB graduate from Colombo, the Open University, Sri Lanka Law College or a recognised UK-affiliated programme who intends to work in corporate legal, compliance or regulatory roles rather than in litigation.
Entry Requirements
Academic
- check_circle A completed Bachelor's or Master's degree in Law at a level equivalent to a Dutch research university, with demonstrable knowledge of European and/or international law — a Sri Lankan LLB from Colombo, the Open University, Sri Lanka Law College or a recognised UK-affiliated programme is the standard route.
- check_circle Unlike the European Law and Global Affairs specialisation, this track does not open a non-law entry route: a law degree is required.
- check_circle Radboud assesses degree equivalence against the Dutch research-university standard, so submit full module descriptions and transcripts, not only the certificate.
- check_circle Applications for the September intake open on 1 October of the preceding year with a non-EU/EEA deadline of 1 April. The February intake opens on 1 May with a non-EU/EEA deadline of 1 November. EU/EEA applicants have later dates that do not apply to Sri Lankan applicants.
- check_circle The Radboud Scholarship Programme closes at the end of January for the September intake — earlier than admission — so the two applications are filed together.
English Proficiency
- check_circle IELTS Academic: 6.5 Overall with Listening 6.0, Reading 6.0, Speaking 6.0 and Writing 6.5.
- check_circle TOEFL iBT: 90 Overall or above, with sub-scores of 4.5 and Listening 5 on the revised scale.
- check_circle Cambridge C1 Advanced 176 overall (sub-scores 169, Writing 176) or C2 Proficiency 180 (sub-scores 169, Writing 180).
- check_circle PTE Academic 61 overall (sub-scores 56, Writing 61), or LanguageCert 70.
- check_circle The exemption covers only Bachelor's degrees obtained at research universities in the Netherlands, Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, Singapore, the UK or the USA. Sri Lanka is not on that list, so an English-medium Sri Lankan LLB does not waive the test.

Career Outcomes & PR
The Netherlands grants graduates the orientation year (zoekjaar), a twelve-month residence permit with full labour-market access and a reduced salary threshold for a job found during it — the most practical post-study route in continental Europe. Radboud names legal counsellor, consultant, policy advisor and researcher as the roles this specialisation leads to, working in financial institutions, multinationals, listed companies, the European Commission, the European Bank and NGOs. The Dutch market itself is unusually dense in corporate legal work because so much European holding-company structuring runs through it, and the international firms in Amsterdam and the Zuidas recruit LLM graduates into compliance, regulatory and in-house tracks. Sri Lankan returnees route into corporate legal and compliance functions at John Keells Holdings, Dialog Axiata, Commercial Bank, HSBC SL, Standard Chartered SL and LOLC, the regulatory teams at the Central Bank of Sri Lanka and the Securities and Exchange Commission, and the corporate and competition practices of leading Colombo firms.
