Course Overview

Radboud University's Faculty of Law runs exactly one English-taught master's — the LLM in International and European Law — and offers it in four specialisations. European Law and Global Affairs is the specialisation for students who want to work on the European Union as a legal order and as an actor in world politics, rather than on private commercial practice. Everything else in Radboud's law faculty is taught in Dutch, so this LLM is the route for an international applicant.

The programme is 60 EC over one year and deliberately small: the European Law and Global Affairs cohort runs at around sixteen students, with ten to twelve contact hours a week. The structure combines four law courses with two taken at the Nijmegen School of Management, which is what gives the specialisation its 'global affairs' character — EU law sits alongside political science and international relations rather than in isolation. An 18 EC thesis closes the year.

Nijmegen is an hour and a half from Brussels and about two from The Hague, which puts the EU institutions and the international courts within reach for internships, moots and fieldwork. Tuition for non-EEA students is €18,873 for 2026-27 — high by continental European standards, and a figure Sri Lankan families should budget precisely, but still below a comparable London LLM once the twelve-month London maintenance requirement is added.

The natural applicant is a Sri Lankan LLB graduate from the University of Colombo Faculty of Law, the Open University, Sri Lanka Law College, or a recognised UK-affiliated programme, who wants EU and public international law depth before or after taking the Bar. Radboud additionally accepts politics, governance, international relations and liberal arts graduates onto this specialisation where the transcript carries at least 60 EC of law courses — which is unusual, and makes it one of the more accessible European LLMs for a non-law graduate with legal coursework.

Entry Requirements

description

Academic

  • check_circle A completed Bachelor's or Master's degree in Law at a level equivalent to a Dutch research university, with demonstrable knowledge of European and/or international law — a Sri Lankan LLB from Colombo, the Open University, Sri Lanka Law College or a recognised UK-affiliated programme is the standard route.
  • check_circle This specialisation additionally accepts graduates in Politics, Governance, International Relations or Liberal Arts whose transcript shows at least 60 EC of law courses.
  • check_circle Radboud assesses degree equivalence against the Dutch research-university standard, so submit full module descriptions and transcripts rather than only the certificate.
  • check_circle Applications for the September intake open on 1 October of the preceding year; the non-EU/EEA deadline is 1 April. The February intake opens on 1 May with a non-EU/EEA deadline of 1 November. EU/EEA applicants get later dates — do not use those.
  • check_circle The Radboud Scholarship Programme deadline falls earlier than the admission deadline (end of January for the September intake), so a scholarship application has to be filed alongside, not after, the admission application.

English Proficiency

  • check_circle IELTS Academic: 6.5 Overall with Listening 6.0, Reading 6.0, Speaking 6.0 and Writing 6.5.
  • check_circle TOEFL iBT: 90 Overall or above, with sub-scores of 4.5 and Listening 5 on the revised scale.
  • check_circle Cambridge C1 Advanced 176 overall (sub-scores 169, Writing 176) or C2 Proficiency 180 (sub-scores 169, Writing 180).
  • check_circle PTE Academic 61 overall (sub-scores 56, Writing 61), or LanguageCert 70.
  • check_circle The exemption applies only to applicants whose Bachelor's was obtained at a research university in the Netherlands, Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, Singapore, the UK or the USA. Sri Lanka is not on that list, so a Sri Lankan English-medium LLB does not waive the test — budget for IELTS and sit it early.

Career Outcomes & PR

The Netherlands offers graduates the orientation year (zoekjaar) — a twelve-month residence permit to look for work with full labour-market access, and a reduced salary threshold if you find a job during it, which is the most practical post-study route in continental Europe. Radboud names legal counsellor, consultant, policy advisor, lobbyist, diplomat, researcher, corporate lawyer and legal analyst as the roles this specialisation leads to, across the public sector, NGOs and academia. Brussels and The Hague are both within commuting distance: the European Commission, the Council, the EU agencies, the International Court of Justice, the ICC and the international arbitration bodies all recruit from Dutch EU-law programmes. Sri Lankan returnees route into the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Sri Lanka Foreign Service, the legal and compliance functions of John Keells Holdings, Dialog Axiata, Commercial Bank, HSBC SL and Standard Chartered SL, trade-policy and WTO-related work at the Department of Commerce, and the public international law and arbitration practices of leading Colombo firms.
