Bachelor of Laws (LLB Honours)
Yong Pung How School of Law, Singapore Management University
Course Overview
Singapore Management University's Yong Pung How School of Law (renamed in 2022 after the former Chief Justice) is one of two Singapore law schools accredited by the Singapore Ministry of Law for Bar admission. The 4-year Honours LLB combines core common-law subjects with Singapore's distinctive regional and commercial focus: ASEAN economic law, international arbitration (Singapore is the leading Asian arbitration seat), Islamic finance law, fintech regulation, and corporate governance. SMU's interactive seminar-style teaching (max 45 students per class) differs from larger lecture-based law schools and is highly regarded by Singapore's top law firms. Final-year students undertake a 10-week Legal Internship at firms like Allen & Gledhill, Rajah & Tann, Drew & Napier, WongPartnership, plus the Singapore Supreme Court.
Sri Lankan applicants — particularly top-tier A-Level students from leading Colombo schools aiming at a regional / commercial law career — choose SMU LLB for the unmatched Singapore commercial-law industry pipeline (Singapore handles 75% of Asia's international arbitration cases), the SGD-pegged tuition materially lower than UK / US equivalents, and Singapore's clear Employment Pass post-study work pathway. After graduation, SMU LLB grads complete the Singapore Bar (Practice Training Course + Bar Exam) and qualify as Advocates and Solicitors of the Supreme Court of Singapore. Sri Lanka Bar reciprocity requires additional Sri Lankan Bar exams but the international commercial-law training transfers cleanly.
