Course Overview

NUS Law is the highest-ranked law faculty in Asia and among the top dozen worldwide, and its LLB is the most selective undergraduate law programme in the region. The four-year degree runs the common-law core — contract, tort, criminal, property, equity and trusts, constitutional and administrative law — alongside a distinctive Asian legal-systems strand covering comparative Chinese, Indian and ASEAN law, plus strong electives in international arbitration, maritime law, banking and finance, and technology law.

Singapore's position is the substance of the degree, not just the setting. The Singapore International Arbitration Centre is one of the two or three busiest arbitral institutions in the world, the Singapore International Commercial Court hears cross-border disputes in English, and the port makes maritime and trade law a live daily practice rather than a specialism. For Sri Lankan students the common-law foundation transfers directly, and Singapore sits four hours from Colombo. The important caveat: admission to the Singapore Bar is restricted, so plan on in-house, arbitration, compliance or a return route via Sri Lanka Law College rather than assuming local practice rights.

Entry Requirements

description

Academic

  • check_circle Outstanding Sri Lankan A-Level results — competitive applicants typically present three A grades — or the IB Diploma with a high point total.
  • check_circle NUS Law admits a small international cohort and is among the most competitive programmes in Asia; grades alone are necessary but not sufficient.
  • check_circle Personal statement, and a record of debating, mooting, public speaking, writing or community leadership carries real weight.
  • check_circle Shortlisted candidates sit an admissions test and interview, conducted online for overseas applicants.
  • check_circle Applications close in February for the August intake — earlier than most Singapore programmes.

English Proficiency

  • check_circle IELTS Academic: 7.0 Overall (no band below 6.5), or TOEFL iBT 100.
  • check_circle NUS Law applies a higher English threshold than the rest of the university, reflecting the writing load.
  • check_circle A waiver based on English-medium instruction is possible but not routine for the LLB — plan to sit the test.
  • check_circle Strong written English is separately assessed through the admissions test and personal statement.

Career Outcomes & PR

The MOE Tuition Grant is the decisive financial mechanism and deserves a careful read: it cuts tuition by roughly half in exchange for a binding three-year commitment to work for a Singapore-registered employer after graduation. For students who intend to stay that is straightforwardly good; for those planning to return to Colombo immediately it is a contractual obligation, not an option to reconsider later. Graduates go into the Singapore and regional offices of the international firms, the big four Singapore practices, in-house counsel and compliance at the banks and multinationals, arbitration practice, and government legal service. Sri Lankan returnees are strong candidates for commercial chambers, in-house counsel roles at John Keells, Dialog, MAS, Brandix and the banks, and cross-border arbitration work.
