Course Overview
Northumbria's International Foundation Year (run jointly with QA Higher Education) is a 9-month bridge programme on the Newcastle city campus, with progression routes into 90+ Northumbria Bachelor's degrees. Pathway streams: Business, Management & Accounting; Engineering, Mathematics & Architecture; Computing & IT; Humanities & Social Sciences. All pathways share an English for Academic Purposes (EAP) core and a study skills module, then specialise across two pathway-specific subjects.
This is the most common entry route for Sri Lankan O/L and A/L students whose results don't quite meet direct Year 1 entry — a 60% average across foundation modules guarantees progression to Year 1 of the linked Bachelor's. Northumbria sits in the top 25 UK universities for graduate employability (HESA) and Newcastle is one of the most affordable UK student cities — combined annual cost ~£26k vs £36k for London.
Entry Requirements
Academic
- check_circle Sri Lankan GCE A/L: 2 passes (any stream) — Foundation is designed for applicants who don't meet direct undergraduate entry.
- check_circle GCSE / O/L English at credit (or IELTS — see below).
- check_circle Mature student route available: 5 O/L credits plus 2 years' work experience.
- check_circle Successful interview (online, ~20 mins) with admissions tutor.
English Proficiency
- check_circle IELTS UKVI Academic: 5.5 Overall (min 5.5 in each band).
- check_circle PTE Academic: 42 Overall.
- check_circle TOEFL iBT: 60 Overall.
- check_circle Waived if your school qualification was taught and assessed entirely in English (most Sri Lankan applicants from Edexcel/Cambridge International streams qualify).

Career Outcomes & PR
Foundation is a pathway, not a terminal qualification — 60% across modules guarantees progression to Year 1 of 90+ Northumbria Bachelor's degrees. Sri Lankan progressors most commonly move into BSc Computing, BEng Mechanical Engineering, BA Business with Management, and BSc Architecture. Eligible for the 2-year UK Graduate Route after completing the Bachelor's.
