Course Overview

UCL's Undergraduate Preparatory Certificate (UPC) is the university's own international foundation year, taught on the Bloomsbury campus by the UCL Centre for Languages & International Education. It runs in two streams — UPCSE for Science and Engineering (maths, physics, chemistry, biology) and UPCH for the Humanities (economics, history, politics, literature, law-facing options) — and both combine subject teaching with academic English, research skills, and the study habits UK degree teaching assumes. Students sit UCL-set examinations, are taught alongside UCL academics, and hold a full UCL student card with library and lab access from day one.

For a Sri Lankan student this is the bridge that local A/Ls alone do not build. UCL does not accept the Sri Lankan GCE A/L for direct entry to Year 1 of its degrees — the standard route in is either a Cambridge/Edexcel A Level or IB profile, or a recognised foundation year. The UPC is that recognised foundation year, and it is designed as a progression route into UCL: students apply through UCAS for their intended UCL degree and hold a conditional offer while they study. Be clear-eyed about how the progression works — a UCL place is conditional on hitting the overall and subject grades the receiving department requires, and the most competitive departments set high bars. It is not automatic. The UPC is also widely accepted by Imperial, LSE, King's College London, Edinburgh, Manchester and Warwick, so a strong result gives you real options even if your first-choice UCL department is out of reach.

Entry Requirements

description

Academic

  • check_circle Sri Lankan GCE A/L: three passes in relevant subjects with strong grades (typically A/B profile) — the UPC is the recognised bridge because UCL does not admit Sri Lankan A/L holders directly into Year 1.
  • check_circle UPCSE applicants need Mathematics plus at least one science at A/L; UPCH applicants need arts, commerce or social-science subjects.
  • check_circle Cambridge / Edexcel AS Levels, a completed Year 13, or a strong local university foundation year are also considered.
  • check_circle Minimum age 17 at the start of the programme.
  • check_circle Personal statement explaining the UCL degree you are aiming at, plus one academic reference — apply through UCAS naming your intended UCL degree.
  • check_circle Progression to UCL is conditional, not guaranteed: you must meet the overall and subject grades set by the department you have applied to.

English Proficiency

  • check_circle IELTS Academic: 6.0 Overall (min 5.5 in each component) for UPCSE.
  • check_circle IELTS Academic: 6.5 Overall (min 6.0 in each component) for UPCH.
  • check_circle TOEFL iBT: 79 Overall (UPCSE) / 92 Overall (UPCH).
  • check_circle PTE Academic: 59 (UPCSE) / 65 (UPCH).
  • check_circle UCL requires a recognised English test for UPC entry — Sri Lankan English-medium schooling on its own is not accepted in place of one. Applicants who fall short can take a UCL pre-sessional English course before the UPC begins.

Career Outcomes & PR

The UPC is not a terminal qualification — its outcome is a UK degree place. The overwhelming majority of UPC students progress to an undergraduate degree at UCL or another Russell Group university, and from there into the UK's 2-year Graduate Route after graduating. Budget for the full journey: the foundation year plus a three-year (or four-year, for engineering and integrated master's) degree. Sri Lankan families should plan the UPC as year zero of a four-to-five-year UK commitment, not as a standalone year abroad.
